Maintenance Worker 1, Grounds - County of Bergen

Department of Parks & Recreation – Division of Park Operations

Under the direction of the Park Manger or Maintenance Supervisor, the employee will perform routine work in caring for and maintain park grounds, athletic fields/turf and related equipment, recreational areas, facility grounds and other landscaped and lawn area and performs other related duties as required.

Job Responsibilities Include (but not limited to):

  • Learns to keep lawns, gardens, parks, and outside areas healthy and visually appealing.
  • Trims and cuts grass and hedges.
  • Operates lawn mowers, weed wackers, edgers, leaf blowers and snow blowers, hedge trimmers and other equipment associated with ground maintenance and landscaping activities. Performs minor maintenance on mowers and other equipment including chaining oil, lubricating parts, and making adjustments.
  • Marks athletic fields and other recreational/game areas. Fills holes in playgrounds, regrades ball fields and keeps play area free of debris and dangerous obstructions.
  • Picks up refuse and litter from grounds.
  • Shovels and removes snow and ice from designated areas, sweeps walks and spreads salt.
  • Rakes leaves and debris.
  • Sets up bleachers.
  • Operate motorized or electric snow removal equipment.
  • Sprays for weeds and insects using unrestricted chemicals.
  • Paints signs, benches, tables, bleachers, and other items as required.
  • Loads and unloads trucks.
  • Clean restrooms.
  • Able to operate a chainsaw.
  • Able to work weekends, holidays, and varied shifts.

Education Requirements:

· High School Diploma.

Schedule:

· Full Time – OT occasional.

Other:

· NJ Driver’s License.

· Possess valid CDL license (preferred).

· Appointees may be required to obtain a pesticide applicator certification issued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

· Skilled in various trade laborer such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, mechanics, and electrics.

· One (1) year of experience in the care and maintenance of grounds.
