Addiction Counselor - County of Bergen

Department of Health Services – Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services

Under direction of a Supervising Substance Abuse Counselor or other supervisory official in a state department or other agency, acts as a case consultant or supervises work of subordinate counselors and does varied tasks involved in assisting clients to make satisfactory social/emotional adjustments; may act as supervisor in a small clinic; supervises staff and work activities; prepares and signs official performance evaluations for subordinate staff; does other related duties.

Knowledge and Job Responsibilities: (may include but not limited to)

· Knowledge of and familiarity with counseling theory, procedures, and techniques.

· Knowledge of and familiarity with laws of New Jersey relating to substance abuse after a period of training.

· Knowledge of current facts, theories, hypotheses, programs, and research in the area of narcotic and dangerous drugs.

· Assist in the development of preliminary treatment and recovery plans.

· Participates in case, diagnostic, and progress conferences.

· Investigates and verifies pertinent facts and information necessary for an effective treatment plan.

· Maintains an assigned caseload of clients and provides necessary group or individual counseling and case management services.

· Ability to take part in trainings and meetings as assigned.

· Ability to prepare correspondence.

· Ability to prepare reports.

· Ability to maintain histories, records, and files.

· Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Education Requirements:

· Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC)

· Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC)

Schedule:

· Full time (day/evening/holidays maybe assigned and weekend hours (flexible schedule))

Other:

· Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in counseling or social work.

o One (1) year must include experience with drug/alcohol treatment, prevention and/or rehabilitation.

· Valid New Jersey (NJ) Driver’s License

· Possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

· Excellent computer skills.
