The Council on Foreign Relations is looking for an Associate Editor to join the Foreign Affairs editorial team. Founded in 1922, Foreign Affairs is the preeminent publication on international affairs and U.S. foreign policy. It is published by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), which is a leading independent, nonprofit membership organization and think tank dedicated to producing and disseminating foreign policy ideas.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a fast-paced team dedicated to publishing expert analysis of current events. The Associate Editor will generate ideas and edits articles for the print edition and the website. The Associate Editor will also serve as the magazine’s digital production manager and homepage editor, ensuring on a daily basis that articles and other content are edited and staged on deadline and posted properly and on schedule.
• Edit articles by working closely with authors to improve analysis, arguments, and readability, and to ensure that articles align with Foreign Affairs’ house style and sensibility
• In coordination with the Executive Editors, oversee the digital production process by:
- Establishing editing and staging timetables for daily content
- Performing daily checks and adjustments on the back end of the website to ensure that content is moving smoothly and posts to the website properly
- Acting as the homepage editor by suggesting content to highlight (on the homepage itself and various landing pages)
- Working with the digital product team to improve website functionality
- Consulting with the magazine’s newsletter, social media, and communications teams on the rollout and promotion of articles
• Consult with experts, other editors, and authors to generate article ideas, and follow through on commissioning pieces
• Work collegially with other editors, copy editors, fact checkers, the art department, the product team, and other personnel
• Evaluate submissions
• Assist the editorial leadership in training and supervising junior editors
Pay Range
$68,000 to $78,000 per year
Pay commensurate with experience and education
