Council on American-Islamic Relations is Hiring an Alabama Community Organizer (Birmingham) Near Washington, DC

Job Title: Alabama Community Organizer (Birmingham)

Position: Full-Time

FLSA: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Reports To: Chief Operating Officer

The Alabama Community Organizer (Birmingham) brings leadership and guidance on organizing functions in the Alabama area. Reporting to and working closely with the Chief Operating Officer, the Alabama Community Organizer will be responsible for community organizing and fundraising efforts in the Alabama area.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Communicating with community members in the Alabama area to understand their needs and concerns.
  • Creating an outreach plan to help spread awareness of CAIR initiatives.
  • Coordinating volunteers and other members in the Alabama community to participate in CAIR events or CAIR projects that support the organization’s goals.
  • Building relationships with Alabama mosques, community leaders, and other groups that can be helpful in achieving CAIR’s goals.
  • Conducting research on Alabama issues and possible solutions, such as school bullying, Islamophobia, workplace discrimination, or other community safety issues.
  • Working with other community allies, local and state officials to improve awareness on CAIR issues and create change through legislation or other means.
  • Implementing community organizing programs designed to empower members of the community to take action on local issues such as “school bullying.”
  • Planning community events to engage Alabama community members in activities that promote social interaction with others in the community.
  • Identifying community needs and developing plans to address those needs through cooperation with other CAIR satellite offices and/or chapters.
  • Submit monthly reports to the Chief Operating Officer.
  • Keep track of event finances including check requests, invoicing, and reporting.
  • Work closely with the operations manager to ensure operational policies and procedures are followed.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings virtually.
  • Plan and conduct fundraising events in the Alabama area.
  • Perform other related duties, as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field.
  • Ability to work some evenings, weekends, and special events as required.
  • Ability to travel locally, state, and travel outside of Alabama as needed.
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing, proof reading skills, and speaking.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work assignments from a variety of staff and volunteers.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills both in person and by phone, with a high degree of professionalism.
  • At least two years’ experience in community organizing in a non-profit organization.
  • Proficient using the latest versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Familiarity, knowledge, and experience working with the American Muslim community is desired.

Starting Hourly rate for this role is: $24.19
