Cosumnes Community Services District is Hiring a Recreation Instructor Near Grove, CA

The Cosumnes Community Services District Parks and Recreation Department is seeking qualified individuals for the position of Recreation Instructor for a wide variety of enrichment programs including, but not limited to dance, visual arts and performing arts; culinary, health, and wellness; and any additional special interests. Actual hours assigned may be increased or decreased at any time depending upon the needs of the program or department. 

Under general supervision, the Recreation Instructor teaches Recreation and Leisure Enrichment classes to a variety of skill and age levels. The Recreation Instructor may teach specialized classes for one or more recreation program areas, including the development and implementation of the program curriculum and budget, procurement of program supplies and assisting with the training of support staff. This position directs activities and supervises participants at the site. Functions and responsibilities expected to be performed may vary depending upon the area of assignment.

Please note: Candidates may be placed in a Recreation Instructor or Recreation Specialist position depending on qualifications and needs of the District.
Recreation Instructor- Hourly Rate: $ 25.50
Recreation Specialist- Hourly Rate: $ 18.00 The following duties are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of a specific statement on duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all the duties listed. Employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level as required. 
Recreation Instructor: 
  • Provides group or private instruction to recreation participants of all ages and skill levels; evaluates participants and teaches according to defined program outlines, descriptions, and goals; maintains course record sheets;
  • Makes minor program modifications to match age and abilities of participants as needed;
  • Provides and develops new curriculum for District programs, including but not limited to, sourcing vendors for program materials;
  • Assists with the update of existing curriculum for District programs;
  • Assists in the development of marketing tools, including but not limited to, requesting and reviewing flier and class descriptions;
  • Designs and implements training specific to their area of instruction; 
  • Maintains constant watch over patrons in assigned areas and assists patrons in distress;
  • Designs and implements program specific training, provides hands-on instruction to onsite staff as required;
  • Required to work shifts, weekends, and holidays.
Recreation Specialist:
  • Assists in the planning, directing and implementing of activities or events within assigned recreation program(s) or facility;
  • Provides group or private instruction using a predetermined curriculum to recreation participants of all age and skill levels;
  • Evaluates participants and teaches according to program outlines, descriptions, and goals;
  • Provides courteous and professional service to all program participants, facility users, CSD personnel and the public;
  • Responsible for and may assist with set up and clean up of facility and equipment;
  • Monitors behavior of participants;
  • Communicates with parents, participants and the public; discusses program concerns and issues; addresses behavior or health problems and solutions when appropriate;
  • Provides clerical and special project assistance to supervisors, lead staff, and Independent Contracted Instructors as required;
  • Required to work shifts, weekends, and holidays.
Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities may be considered qualifying at the sole discretion of the District. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
Recreation Instructor Qualifications:
Education and Training:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
Certain assignments may require certifications. When specified, the certifications must be obtained by time of appointment and must be retained throughout employment as a condition of employment.
Experience:
  •  Two (2) years of teaching and/or coaching in the area of instruction; or applicable degree or certification/designation in the area of instruction.
Special Requirements:
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, First Aid and CPR/AED certification within the first thirty (30) days of employment; Certification must be maintained through employment;
  • Water Aerobics: Possession of a valid Water Aerobics Instructor Certification from the Aquatic Exercise Association, United States Water Fitness Association or equivalent;
  • Golf Course: PGA/LPGA Membership
Some positions may require occasional driving, when specified those positions will include the following requirements:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must possess a valid California class "C" driver's license, with a clean driving record and maintain it throughout employment;

Recreation Specialist Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent, preferred; 
  • Six (6) months of increasingly responsible work experience or equivalent community/volunteer service (or) actively enrolled in college or other post High School education; 
  • Must be 16 years of age or older and ability to obtain and retain a Work Permit throughout employment, if under the age of 18;

Knowledge of:
  • Current methods, techniques, principles, and procedures used in the planning, organizing, scheduling, coordinating, and evaluating recreation programs or facilities;
  • Proficiency in computer database programs, desktop publishing, and word processing currently used programs such as Word, Excel, Active Net, VISIO, and PowerPoint;
  • Basic operation of automated office machines including calculator, computer, keyboard, printers, and other peripherals, copier, and fax machine;
  • Basic arithmetic including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; calculation of decimals, ratios, percentages, and fractions;
  • Coaching and instruction methods for all ages and abilities.
Ability to: 
  • Effectively and tactfully communicate both orally and in writing with program participants, facility users, independent contractors, vendors, CSD personnel and the public;
  • Comprehend and prepare reports and forms such as accident, incident, and behavior reports; emergency, registration, and Hold Harmless forms using a prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style;
  • Lead a classroom of students providing clear instruction and guidance on a day to day basis;
  • Analyze and use independent judgment in problem solving fairly routine situations such as responding to customer or employee problems/complaints, supervising children's activities and trips, caring for children with injuries and resolving conflicts between participants to ensure safety.
  • Mobility: frequent use of keyboard; frequent sitting at desk or in meetings for long periods of time; occasionally reaching and twisting to reach equipment surrounding desk; occasional walking, standing, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crawling and twisting while performing classroom work; frequent pushing, pulling or lifting up to forty (40) pounds for setting up programs and/or special events;
  • Vision: constant use of overall vision; frequent computer use; occasional color and depth vision;
  • Dexterity: frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing and typing; frequent grasping, holding and reaching; frequent operation of office equipment and hand tools such as, but not limited to, cleaning and first aid supplies such as scissors, plunger and mop;
  • Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person and on the phone;
  • Emotional/Psychological: frequent decision making and concentration, frequent public and/or coworker contact; occasionally works alone;
  • Driving: ability to use fine and gross motor coordination for driving. 
Typical Working Conditions
 Work will be performed indoors or outside depending on the classes being taught. Those being taught outdoors will be in various types of weather. Incumbents may be exposed to noise, moisture, dust, vibrations, heat and cold. Work may take place and require travel in a vehicle to and from off-site indoor and outdoor locations throughout the District.THE PROCESS:
