Corpus Christi Housing is Hiring a Construction Inspector Near Corpus Christi, TX

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Director of Construction, performs specialized work involving the inspection, monitoring and scheduling of all assigned construction projects. Responsible for ensure contractors perform to the standards specified in the contracts. Monitors and reports contractor’s progress and performance. Performs other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs daily site inspections on construction projects to monitor compliance with Contract Documents.
  • Generates and maintains project status reports regarding significant events that take place on the construction site.
  • Monitors quality of workmanship, timelines of delivery of materials and of performance, need for contract charges and time extensions, and any contractor problems that may arise.
  • Charts flow of job with construction schedule.
  • Prepares and processes construction progress reports, change orders, request for payments, and any other information that the Director of Construction determines as necessary for the proper administration of the contract.
  • Meets in the office and field with contractors, property managers, city building inspectors, architects and other persons conducting business with the Housing Authority construction activities such as staging, resident relocation, and construction scheduling.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS and PREFERENCES:

  • Required Education and Experience: Associates Degree in Engineering Technology or a related field and three (3) years of experience in all phases of housing construction, with a minimum of two (2) years verifiable experience as a Building Inspector or Housing Inspector. An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be substituted for the degree.
  • Required - Must hold a valid Texas Driver License and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record. May operate Authority vehicle while on Housing Authority business.
  • Required - Ability to workflexible hours other than 8-5, including emergencies, in variable weather conditions and overtime as required to meet Housing Authority goals and objectives
  • Preferred - Ability to converse in Spanish preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Good working technical knowledge of standards and procedures regarding construction methods, product and material specifications and industry installation standards.
  • Knowledge of housing assistance program, its basic functions, policies, and procedures enabling the employee to respond to the inquiries of contractors, owners, tenants, ability to complete standard forms and prepare complete, concise narrative reports; ability to enter data into a computer.
  • Good working knowledge of safety hazards and precautions pertinent to the work.
  • Knowledge of the geographic layout of the city.
  • Exceptional analytical ability, with extensive knowledge of methods, procedures and materials used in maintenance work; knowledge of building codes.
  • Knowledge of various building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical codes.
  • Knowledge of the regulations governing housing quality standards.
  • Ability to recognize and recommend to the Director of Construction quality of construction work, perform simple arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to ensure compliance in all areas of contract scope of work; and reporting requirements, interpret and apply specific situations to Housing Authority compliance.
  • Ability to work independently and produce acceptable volume and quality of work under pressure to meet specific deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to convey a variety of ideas and concepts; ability to use independent judgment.
  • Ability to meet and deal effectively with owners, managers, and tenants in various situations.
  • Ability to keep accurate records; inspect work-in-progress and work completed.
  • Should demonstrate initiative, firmness and impartiality.
  • Ability to plan and organize workload.
  • Ability to determine the most expeditious manner in which an assignment may be accomplished.
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationships and demonstrate good judgment and integrity with staff, residents, and the public.
  • Ability to deal effectively with diverse groups and individuals.
  • Ability to plan and organize workload.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions.
