Corovan is Hiring a Paralegal/Claims Near Poway, CA

$36.06 - $42.79 / hour

Corovan Corporation, through its entities, provides commercial moving, transportation, logistics and warehousing services. The Legal Department supports all of the departments and entities with operational, compliance and governance matters; transactions with customers, vendors and leases; and addresses issues related to conflicts and risk management. Reporting to the General Counsel Attorney, the Paralegal/Claims position will generally assist the General Counsel in providing these services to the company.

The Paralegal / Claims will also assist with insurance matters such as insurance policy coverage and renewals, insurance claims, and insurance related litigation, including, but not limited to the following areas: EPLI, D&O, Errors and Omissions; various bonding requirements; General Liability, Health and Welfare, and review outside counsel billing and practices.

This position will also oversee active management of claims process for property losses, including review of claims, assess and adjust the valuation claim, coordinate updates, conduct any investigation, as needed, and handle resolution, including any distribution of funds, and the collection of signed claims release forms.Additionally, this position will handle the collection of waiver claim forms when needed in undue risk situations.

This position is responsible for and will coordinate the transition of and litigation to General Counsel. Reports to the General Counsel but may be given direction from the President.

This position may act as a liaison with outside insurance counsel, assist with any investigation and discovery requests, and will assist with the review of outside counsel billing and practices.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Corporate:

  • Assist with filing entity formation documentation, including the formation, consolidation, and dissolution of corporations, partnerships, and limited liability companies.
  • Assist in developing best practices including legal templates, forms, policies, procedures, guidance documents, etc.
  • Assist in corporate governance matters, including preparation and maintenance of corporate minutes, draft resolutions, and manage filings with various governmental agencies.
  • Support the corporate board by preparing meeting agendas, taking minutes, and ensuring compliance with corporate governance standards.
  • Conduct legal research and provide insights to the legal team on various corporate legal matters.
  • Act as liaison with outside counsel and manage the flow of information and documents.
  • Respond to government and regulatory agency inquiries.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of various transactional documents, including contracts, agreements, and other legal documents, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Maintain company contract database in current status, including uploading commercial customer contracts into the company shared drive.
  • Provide support in managing legal aspects of customer projects, including assisting in dispute resolution.
  • May assist with the review of company 401k Plan documents, Deferred Plan Compensation documents, including ESOP and SAR documents, as well as, any related company/vendor contracts, and manage the maintenance of any plan documents and handle the collection of any signatures on new and updated plan documents.
  • Assist with Contract Lifecycle Management software implementation.

Compliance:

  • Conform with and abide by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions.

·Participate in process improvement projects through bridge-building and partnering skills to allow solution-focused conversations.

·Monitor and ensure that all necessary federal, state and local licensing is maintained as required by law.

·Research licensing requirements, including new regulations, updates and/or revisions.

Claims Administrative Management:

  • Oversee claims process for cargo transportation, vehicles, and property, including invoicing, negotiations, administration, monitoring and tracking of claims repairs to come to a resolution.
  • Investigate and analyze cargo claims for loss, damage, and delays to determine company liability and costs for damage or loss while protecting company interests.
  • Work with insurance vendors to resolve subrogation claims and subrogate against other insurance companies.
  • Evaluate coverage, draft coverage correspondence, and undertake claims investigations and work with third party vendors.
  • Order bid bonds and payment/performance bonds for the O & I sales team.
  • Attend insurance meetings when appropriate.
  • Partner with all parties involved to ensure resolution and handle any negotiations.
  • Manage claims inventory to meet individual, team, and company goals.
  • Maintain master list of insurance companies, brokers and bonding agencies, including contact information, policy coverage effective dates, payments due and renewal dates.

Administrative Support:

  • Compose professional correspondence.
  • Produce weekly reports of statistical data and metrics to leadership on status and trends by division, at-fault and good-will settlements separated.
  • Assist with file storage and inventory preparation of department and company records as needed.

Customer Relations:

·Must follow all confidentiality rules regarding customer information.

. Use finesse and judgement to interact with internal and external customers in person and via telephone, fax, and email to ensure complete customer satisfaction in all matters related to operations.

·Maintain excellent customer service with the internal and external customers including service branch operations teams to establish solid relationships.

· Use a high level of professionalism in verbal and written communications to focus on problem solving and arrive at a win-win interaction.

Other Duties:

  • Must follow all confidentiality and chain of custody rules for all client data and items.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Required:

  • Certificate from an ABA approved Paralegal Program or a Juris Doctorate from ABA approved law school.
  • Also considered are practical training qualified third or fourth year evening division law students, or out-of-state multijurisdictional practice registration attorneys looking to gain California in-house experience.
  • A minimum of three years of experience as a Paralegal with claims experience, preferably with experience in the transportation, storage (household goods or commercial) or construction industries, or insurance or claims management industry.
  • Proficient in legal research and an understanding and knowledge of federal and state laws, including Common Law Liability, State and Federal Regulations, and Commercial Contracts.
  • Knowledge of various claims presented under Cargo Transportation and Professional Lines policies is a plus.
  • Contract lifecycle management software experience highly desirable.
  • Proficient in MS Office, including MS Excel and PowerPoint, and/or Microsoft Office Suite. Proficient with OE 4.0 claims recordkeeping system and the Infor ERP.
  • Demonstrated experience in corporate governance, entity formation, and transactional matters.
  • Proficiency in preparation and review of various corporate legal documents.
  • Experience in supporting corporate boards and managing board-related matters.
  • Reliable transportation to the corporate headquarters, as this position is not remote.
