The Opportunity

As an HR Generalist within our Facilities and Campus Services team, you will be responsible for delivering a wide range of HR services and support to staff across the division. FCS is a dynamic and diverse workplace with over 1,000 employees, including both non-union staff and those represented by multiple unions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • HR Support: Independently provide support and guidance to staff and managers on HR processes, policies, procedures, and activities within the Division.
  • Relationship Building: Proactively foster positive relationships and collaborate with managers, staff, and union leadership on various aspects of human resources management, including recruitment, retention, employee relations, labor relations, and more.
  • Collective Bargaining: Serve as the primary point of contact for employees, managers, and union representatives regarding Collective Bargaining Agreements, with a focus on navigating the complexities of agreements such as UAW, BTC, and IUOE.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws, as well as University and division-wide policies, procedures, and Collective Bargaining Agreements.
  • Deliver training on various HR topics as needed to support the development of staff and managers.
  • Process Improvement: Actively identify opportunities for process improvements and suggest innovative solutions to streamline HR processes and enhance efficiency.
  • Workplace Culture: Contribute to creating a positive, engaged work environment by providing observations and recommendations, demonstrating sound judgment, maintaining confidentiality, and fostering inclusion, respect, and trust.

This is a full-time endowed position that is based in Ithaca, NY. This position follows a hybrid work schedule with the expectation of 3-4 days on-site. Work hours are flexible between the hours of 7am-5pm.


What We Need

We are looking for a team member who has strong administrative skills, is familiar with recruitment, follows through on tasks, and has attention to detail. Additionally, you will:

  • Have strong interpersonal and customer service skills and the ability to build trust/maintain relationships with diverse audiences at all levels of the organization.
  • Be able to interact diplomatically with a wide array of individuals under sometimes stressful, emotionally charged situations and possess cultural awareness.
  • Have experience working in a fast-paced, high-volume HR or operations environment with ability to prioritize appropriately with ability to adapt to change.
  • Be comfortable and skilled in training and facilitating for large and small audiences.
  • Have demonstrated experience as an independent thinker and self-starter. Proactive, solution-oriented approach with demonstrated sound judgement in decision making.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrate a positive and professional attitude.
  • Effectively contribute to the development of a highly successful, team-oriented work environment.
  • Demonstrate ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with tact and discretion; commitment to ethical workplace practices.
  • Demonstrate Cornell’s Staff Skills for Success and FCS’s values in thought and practice.
  • Understand and navigate HR information systems.
  • Have experience with office productivity software including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Utilize software to perform complex data analysis, including pivot tables, merging files, producing graphs from multiple data sources

  • Experience in a unionized and/or higher education environment.
  • Knowledge of Workday, Qualtrics, and Tableau.
  • SHRM Certification.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. Employees typically perform this role
    remotely 1-2 days per week and on-campus 3-4 days per week. The university reserves the right to modify, suspend, revoke or terminate the hybrid work arrangement at any time.
  • This position is based in Ithaca, New York, however, the successful applicant may perform this
    role remotely anywhere within the United States. Employees who work remotely may receive
    multiple W-2 Forms depending on their work location. The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholding for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside of New York State.
