Job Title: Product Design Engineer

SUMMARY

Our client is a leading manufacturer of tools and equipment for telecommunication cable installation and line maintenance. Since 1956 our tools are used daily by the hard-working Pro’s installing and maintaining the infrastructure that connects America. 

Working closely with the product development team, the Product Design Engineer will take products through concept design, detailed design and product development, prototyping, field testing, launch and stable production. The Design Engineer will be responsible for using sound engineering design principals, working with our product managers to ensure products meets requirements, and with operations and supply chain teams to ensure designs consider manufacturing and assembly processes and total cost.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in product design, having brought innovative products to market meeting customer, commercial and budget expectations. Must possess strong mechanical and manufacturing engineering competencies used in the creation, validation, approval and continued quality assurance of products brought to market. Experience with product design of professional grade tools for the telecommunications markets would be very desirable. A strong background in mechanical engineering and material science would be advantageous, as would experience with industrial design. Strong proficiency in Computer Aided Design and Engineering is a must, Jameson uses SolidWorks. Ability to document designs using CAD software and create toleranced drawings with clear documentation of requirements for use with suppliers is a requirement. Must be able to create product test plans and quality assurance documentation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

- Review project specifications and validate the product requirements with team members, customers and end users.

- Create multiple design concepts/product-solutions for review and selection against key characteristics and commercial criteria

- Develop detailed designs utilizing sound engineering principals, value add and value engineering, and design for manufacturing concepts and techniques.

- Produce 3D CAD models and drawings detailing material specification, dimensions, tolerances and any processing requirements.

- Work with suppliers and operations team to produce working prototypes for field testing.

- Validate first production articles through testing.

- Manage multiple projects / assignments simultaneously

- Work as part of a team to meet product development schedule and milestones

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

- BS Degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering

- Minimum 5 year of experience working as a design engineer

- Proficiency in CAD software (we use SolidWorks)
