COP CONSTRUCTION is Hiring an Underground Wet Utility Foreman Near North Salt Lake, UT

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Foreman assists the Superintendent with on-site management of construction projects and field personnel from inception to completion of each assigned project. The Foreman is responsible for the successful execution of all construction activities within his or her scope of work on the project. The Foreman reports directly to and works under the direction of the Superintendent. If no Superintendent is assigned to a project, the Foreman shall report to and work under the direction of the Project Manager and or Construction Manager.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

While other duties may be assigned, the essential duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Be knowledgeable of, follow and enforce all company safety rules and procedures and all other applicable safety requirements.
  • Be knowledgeable of, follow and enforce all other company policies and procedures.
  • Thoroughly understand the scope of work by reading and understanding the construction project documents such as plans, specifications, and drawings sufficient to perform the responsibilities of a Foreman.
  • Organize the work each day and assign tasks to the crew.
  • Complete work on schedule and in accordance with the plans / specifications.
  • Develop and update a written one-week look ahead schedule approved by the Superintendent.
  • Coordinate manpower needs with the Superintendent and/or Project Manager.
  • Relay problems and concerns to the Superintendent and/or Project Manager.
  • Ensure no equipment damage and maximize equipment utilization and efficiency, including but not limited to heavy equipment, company tools, company vehicles, company iPads, company cell phones, company computers, etc.
  • Hold and document daily pre-shift meeting prior to the start of the shift to discuss proposed work, address potential hazards and implement safety measures to prevent accident. Document said meetings on a JSA form in Tyfoom.
  • Make certain all crew members are “fit for duty” each day.
  • Make certain that all crew members have and use the required safety equipment.
  • Immediately stop and correct safety violations or infractions by all employees, subcontractors, and vendors.
  • Coordinate the ordering of material and supplies with the Superintendent and / or Project Manager.
  • Monitor subcontractors performing work within the scope of work assigned.
  • Coordinate utility locates, as needed.
  • See that work meets or exceeds established quality standards.
  • Assist with accident investigations.
  • Spend time with each employee, especially with newly hired crew members. Train crew members in the proper use of tools and equipment.
  • Monitor the work area and see that they are kept clean and orderly.
  • Regularly check equipment and vehicle cabs for cleanliness.
  • See that equipment is properly cleaned and parked as required.
  • Daily completion of Foreman Reports
  • Document work completed; quantities installed; changes affecting production delays; safety; other important issues
  • Daily review and sign crew member timecards; checking for accuracy in reporting time, equipment hours, equipment number(s), project number(s), and phase codes.
  • See that all COP property is secured during work and at the end of each day.
  • Discipline and terminate employees working under his or her direction in accordance with COP policies.
  • Recommend, direct, and implement measures to improve production, quality, and safety.
  • Receive and verify quantities of delivered material, correct and sign delivery tickets.
  • Performs additional assignments as required by the operating needs of the construction unit or as directed by the Superintendent or other Operations Management.
  • The work hours of this position will vary according to the particular project assignment.
  • Drive a motor vehicle safely to visit job sites, attend meetings, travel as necessary, and otherwise perform the responsibilities of the position.
  • Travel to and live in the area of remote construction project locations as may be required for whatever periods of time as are necessary to complete such projects.

Safety and Related Job Site Issues

  • Knows and follows company attitude toward and policies pertaining to safety, and regularly works to foster a safe work environment.
  • Knows, follows, and sees to it that co-workers and subcontractors know and follow safety rules.
  • Knows and follows the Site-Specific Safety Plan for each project.
  • Follows company policy regarding use of the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and adherence to JSA's.
  • Maintains an orderly and clean job site.
  • Takes appropriate steps to protect company property from theft and vandalism and properly makes uses of company alarm and anti-theft systems.
  • Knows and follows incident reporting procedures.
  • Knows and follows company policy on drug and alcohol use and testing.

Planning and Implementation of Work

  • Plans and implements work and goals for each week and for each day in advance.
  • Reviews, understands, and implements construction project documents such as contracts, plans, specifications, drawings, job layout, as-builts and quality books sufficient to perform the responsibilities of this position.
  • Is responsible for personnel on the job site including but not limited to assisting in the determination of personnel needs, personnel availability, personnel scheduling, personnel assignment, personnel hiring, personnel discipline and personnel termination.
  • Is responsible for equipment and tools on the job site including but not limited to assisting in the determination of equipment and tool needs, equipment and tool availability and equipment scheduling.
  • Is responsible for materials on the job site including but not limited to assisting in the determination of material needs, material availability, material scheduling, material storage, and material handling.
  • Is responsible for subcontractors on the job site including but not limited to making sure all pre-work requirements are met and determining subcontractor needs, availability and scheduling.
  • Is responsible for production including but not limited to knowing and implementing the necessary means and methods to complete the desired production in a safe and efficient manner, while maintaining quality control and profitability.
  • Is responsible for maintaining relationships including but not limited to establishing and maintaining contact with clients, subcontractors, vendors, and neighboring owners in order to maintain positive working relationships and to be responsive to their needs and concerns.
  • Assists with job cost coding, cost engineering and cost control.
  • Performs certain construction activities as necessary.

Communication and Documentation

  • Completes Daily Diaries as part of the project file daily.
  • Assists with timecards and record keeping - timely and accurately maintains and completes time record keeping and timecards.
  • Timely and accurately communicates with the Superintendent and / or Project Manager to keep all construction documents current (change orders, add schedules, purchase orders, RFI’s, submittals, daily dairies and record keeping, etc.), making sure to timely document things in writing in order to ensure an accurate written record of the project’s progress; to ensure compliance with all contract and subcontract requirements; and, to ensure protection of the interests of the company.
  • Keeps supervisors continuously informed of project issues, incidents, production information and all other information and suggestions necessary to complete the project safely, efficiently, on time, and on budget.
  • Assists Superintendent with taking job site photographs.

Leadership and Cooperation

  • Cooperates with all company departments and operations personnel to foster a team approach to completing company projects and company objectives.
  • Treats others with respect.
  • Leads by example.
  • Instructs and trains others as to proper construction and safety procedures in order to enhance their development while contributing to the overall benefit of the project and the company.
  • Maintains and communicates a positive attitude toward a project specifically, toward work in general, and toward the company as a whole.

Training Requirements

A Foreman must have the following training certifications, including on the job training and keeping them current, as noted:

  • OSHA 10/30
  • Daily Tyfoom video training and holding the crew members accountable to the same.
  • Trench Safety Competent Person
  • Confined Space Competent Person
  • Traffic Control Maintainer
  • All other project-specific or assigned trainings, as required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

A Foreman has supervisory responsibilities over all crew members on that Foreman’s particular assigned project, subject to the oversight and direction of the Superintendent, Project Manager and/or the Construction Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • 3 years of construction operations experience, or the combination of 2 years of construction experience and related construction education, based upon the assigned area of operations. A person’s qualifications must be such that the person filling this position has acquired the special training, experience and knowledge necessary to accomplish the responsibilities of the position.
  • The ability to work under only general supervision and exercise the necessary discretion and independent judgment to accomplish the specialized and technical aspects of the position.
  • OSHA, risk management and project management courses or the equivalent on-the-job exposure and training to successfully perform the functions of this position related to these areas of knowledge.
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities typically needed for competent performance include but are not limited to the following:
  • The mechanical and construction knowledge, including methods and practices, to perform or direct the performance of assigned construction tasks;
  • Sufficient knowledge of basic project management industry standards, best practices and safety standards to perform the functions of this position;
  • Must be able to read plans, specifications, contracts, subcontracts and other construction documents within the responsibilities of this position;
  • The ability to sufficiently learn company procedures and forms to perform administrative tasks associated with this position;
  • Must be able to perform assigned record keeping functions;
  • Sufficient problems solving skills to perform the functions of this position;
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in writing and verbally to the extent necessary to carry out assigned job functions;
  • Sufficient interpersonal skills and leadership skills to perform the functions of this position;
  • Must be able to diplomatically and effectively maintain a good working relationship with the Owner, the Engineer, Subcontractors, Vendors, co-workers, and anyone else associated with a project;
  • Ability to work and excel in a team environment.

Must be able to travel to and live in the area of remote construction project locations as may be required for whatever periods of time as are necessary to complete such projects.

Must be a licensed driver with a driving record and driving ability sufficient to meet company insurance requirements and sufficient to visit job sites, attend meetings, and otherwise travel as necessary.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position is a field-based position that requires 100% of their time spent on construction sites exposing the employee to outside weather conditions.

As part of the construction industry an employee may encounter a variety of conditions, environments and temperatures depending upon the particular task being performed, including but not limited to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; extreme cold, extreme heat; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate in the office and moderate to high in the field.
