Firefly Song Program Director

Seasonal, At-will employee

Supervisor / Reports to : Camp Director

Camp Overview : Firefly Song (FS) serves girls and nonbinary campers, ages 9-14. FS is one of the biggest overnight camps, with about 115 campers and 55 staff (including leadership, cabin counselors, cooks, and trip staff).

We run two three-week sessions for campers and a two-plus week staff training window prior to campers' arrival. FS campers learn technical and interpersonal skills and reflect on belonging, inclusion, and who they want to become.

Position Summary : The Program Director is one of the top three leadership roles (along with the Director and the Assistant Director) tasked with making sure that campers have a magical experience at camp, particularly during the activity blocks.

The role supports staff in their efforts to deliver quality programming and manages scheduling and logistics around the camp program.

The Program Director supervises (with support from the Director) the Activity Area Heads.

The Program Director takes the lead on some of these areas, while in others they will oversee subgroups who volunteer to plan the activities or special events.

Essential Functions :

  • Ensure the smooth running of the daily schedule for all campers and staff
  • Create and plan activities, events, and camper programming in alignment with F&W and FS expectations and values
  • Ensure consistent high-quality program through active monitoring and frequent coaching of staff
  • Morning programming :
  • Schedule First and Big Lodge campers into morning activity area rotations
  • Facilitate sign-ups for Senior Lodge Apprenticeships
  • Afternoon programming :
  • Ensure staff sign up for afternoon activities and that there are enough good activities to meet campers' needs.
  • Facilitate afternoon activity announcements for campers including camper sign ups.
  • Support planning groups for All Camp Games, Banquet, Special Days, etc., ensuring these programs and events are successful
  • Manage Activity Area Heads, facilitate group meetings, and provide mentorship and support).
  • Create schedule as necessary for FS and monitor All Camp Calendar.
  • Actively collaborate with all FS staff

Additional Responsibilities :

  • Help with the general flow of camp (lead by example, participate in activities, announcements, chores, driving, trip pack-outs, opening and closing day flow).
  • Work collaboratively with staff from other camps and departments to deliver occasional shared programming. Serve as a member of the Summer Leadership Team and maintain close communication with Program Directors from other camps
  • Keeping in mind F&W’s values of simplicity, resourcefulness, and recycling / reusing, acquire necessary materials for programming.
  • Work with the Camp Director to stay within the program budget.
  • Be present for formal and informal conversations with the Leadership team.
  • Write an end-of-summer report as advised by the Camp Director.
  • Ejectively manage all digital files within our Microsoft 365 ecosystem
  • Other duties as assigned by the Camp Director

Work Conditions :

  • Work shifts consist of 6 days on, 1 day off
  • Live in three-sided open-air cabins (RUSTIC and no electricity)
  • Toilets are composting outhouses
  • Outdoor showers with hot running water
  • Meals, coffee, and tea are provided through our camp kitchens
  • Ability to navigate and walk on hilly, uneven terrain
  • Employees will have access to WIFI in designated spaces and cannot use cell phones and / or other technology outside of these designated spaces.
  • The use of nicotine, alcohol, and controlled substances (including marijuana) is not allowed on camp property.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience :

  • Prior experience working or volunteering with children preferred.
  • Prior experience in a supervisory or leadership role
  • Ability to act with integrity with both campers and staff in a residential community setting.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, multi-layer environment.
  • Openness to work with people (both staff and campers) from diverse backgrounds (e.g., ability, economic, racial, religious, political, geographical, gender, sexual orientation, cultural).
  • Must pass reference checks and background screenings, which include sex offender registry check.
