The Equipment Operator I plays a critical role in the operations of citywide sanitation services, as this position is fundamental to the recycling center and landfill facility operations. Found throughout all facility areas, this position is multi-skilled including such duties as the operation and maintenance of heavy motorized equipment; roadway and drainage construction; and materials management. S/he ensures all working areas are clean and fully functioning and maintains safety and professionalism as priorities in all aspects of daily work. Entry-level position.
Class 1A Solid Waste Management Operator License required within 6 months of hire; Class 1B required within 18 months of hire.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Operate a variety of heavy equipment in compliance with the department safety policies and procedures.
2. Operate a variety of heavy equipment for the transferring, spreading, covering, loading and/or compacting of waste or soil.
3. Conduct routine equipment inspections and light preventative maintenance.
4. Move and position materials of various origins with use of material moving equipment.
5. Assist as necessary to complete roadway and drainage construction and maintenance.
6. Communicate and act with professional respect to public visitors.
7. Work independently and with a team to meet daily needs of the recycling or landfill facility.
8. Assist in multiple facility area operations, including but not limited to the recycling facility, working face, yard waste, and customer convenience area.
9. Obtain a Class 1A Solid Waste Management Facility Operator License required within 6 months of hire if assigned to landfill operations.
10. Obtain a Class 1B Solid Waste Management Facility Operator License required within 18 months of hire if assigned to landfill operations.
11. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
