Job Objectives: This job requires performance of labor tasks related to contracting, which include shoveling, sweeping and raking materials, and ground maintenance. Workers climb in and out of trucks and heavy equipment, as well as lift a variety of objects on and off trucks. Job tasks are performed in awkward positions and while walking over a variety of terrain. The job is performed outdoors with exposure to extreme temperatures.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Repetitive shoveling/raking/sweeping materials.
  • Lifting variety of heavy objects on and off trucks and equipment.
  • Climbing on and off trucks and equipment.
  • Ability to accurately grade surfaces and determine if they are level.
  • Aid in the lay out of a job.
  • Assist all skilled personnel as needed.
  • Accept direction from supervisor.
  • Run equipment as necessary recommended by supervisor.
  • Follow all safety guidelines at all times.
  • Fill out and sign time cards daily including job site, hours, and equipment numbers when available.
  • Perform any other functions deemed necessary by your supervisor.

Critical Demands:

Occasionally: An activity or condition existing up to 1/3 of the time; Frequently: An activity or condition existing form 1/3 to 2/3 of the time; Continuous: An activity or condition existing 2/3 or more of the time. (Dictionary of Occupational Titles)

  • Standing: Continuous. Requires the ability to stand on various types of surfaces and terrain, including up to 12' differential grade between prepared and unprepared surfaces, construction sites and mountainous terrain.
  • Walking: Continuous. Requires the ability to walk on various types of surfaces and terrain, including up to 12" differential grade between prepared and unprepared surfaces, construction sites and mountainous terrain.
  • Lifting/Carrying: Continuous. This position is classified as "Heavy Work". This requires the ability to "exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects." Workers will primarily be using shovels, with loads weighing 25 to 50 pounds, to lift material from ground to waist level. Other objects will vary in size and weight, less than 50 pounds, to lift material from ground to waist level. Other objects will vary in size and weight, less than 50 pounds, utilizing one or two arm carry less than 30'. These tasks are usually performed on uneven terrain.
  • Climbing: Occasional. Requires the ability to climb in and out of heavy trucks up to 3 steps, 4 "width, 16" apart. Ability to climb on and off heavy equipment in awkward positions.
  • Push/Pull: Continuous. Requires the ability to use a shovel or rake to push or pull material weighing 25 to 50 pounds at ground level.
  • Balance: Continuous. Requires the ability balance self while climbing

on heavy equipment or while working in awkward positions on uneven terrain. This is usually performed while carrying tools or a shovel full of material weighing 25 to 50 pounds.

  • Reaching: Continuous. Requires the ability to utilize reaching motion while raking/shoveling material; below waist level. Occasional. Requires reaching overhead for tools and materials off trucks or equipment.
  • Grasping/Handling: Continuous. Requires the ability for gross grasp of 50 pounds, sustained less than 5 seconds on tool handles. Requires gross grasp for various size, shape and weight objects. Occasional use of vibratory tools may be encountered.
  • Long Handled Tool Use: Continuous. Requires the ability to perform safe, neutral spine technique for shoveling and/or raking material weighing 25 to 50 pounds.
  • Vision: Continuous. Requires the ability for environmental awareness at construction site as well as good depth perception to accurately determine if surfaces are level.
  • Climate: Continuous. Requires the ability to tolerate extreme temperatures.
  • Endurance: Excellent. Requires the ability to tolerate up to 10-14 hours days; 7 days a week.

Equipment used to perform job:

  • Clothing provided by employee: steel toe boots and leather gloves.
  • Safety equipment provided by employer: safety vest, hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses.
  • Tools: rake, shovel, jackhammer, jumping jack, plate compactor, sledgehammer, pick and hand broom.
