Position Title

Field Geologist/Physical Science Technician Resource Assistant

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

Stewards in partnership with Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands (Cibola NF & NG), and other New Mexico national forests. The participant will gain exposure to various areas related to the Cibola NF & NG minerals and geology program including locatable minerals, Abandoned Mine Lands (AML), and caves. This field geology position will be an opportunity to do important field work in beautiful and remote areas of central New Mexico. The participant will assist two Cibola NF & NG geologists and other specialists with field inspections of any active projects, and will collect, gather, organize, and update data on AML sites, and caves.

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Provide support in conjunction with the forest geologists in minerals administration for large locatable (hard rock) mining and exploration operations, as well as support for leasable and saleable mineral operations, AML closure and monitoring.
  • They will be expected to interact with the public regarding mining and the multi-use mission of the USFS. Work will be mostly field based with office time to upload and organize the data collected. Office time will be spent developing GIS products, entering field data, writing reports, and organizing photos and other imagery.
  • Field work will often involve strenuous physical activity, such as hiking in steep terrain at high altitudes, carrying heavy equipment, and/or working in uncomfortable weather (from hot to rainy), for many hours a day. Participant will need a backpack, a sturdy pair of hiking boots, and appropriate clothing for inclement weather. Work typically takes place M-F. Some field areas are remote and will require multi-day camping trips.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Degree in geology and/or closely related sciences, e.g., environmental science, earth sciences, mine engineering, geological engineering, geohydrology, or hydrology
  • Computer skills in Microsoft applications such as Excel spreadsheet, Word, PowerPoint.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by Conservation Legacy (over 21 years old or drivers license for at least three years).
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Must have High School Diploma/GED.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a post-secondary degree by end of service (Associate’s or Higher)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The participant should be able to work well independently, both in the office and in the field with little oversight, have basic map reading and GPS orientation skills, able to interpret aerial photos, and be comfortable hiking cross-country in a rugged mountain environment.
  • Skills in ArcGIS or ArcPro would make the applicant more competitive. Along with good database management.

  • The USFS Resource Assistant Program (RAP) is a rigorous, immersive, paid internship providing developmental and training opportunities for individuals interested in learning more about Forest Service careers. After completing a minimum of 960 hours of satisfactory work and an associate degree, RA’s may acquire a two-year certificate of noncompetitive hiring eligibility. The certificate enables participants to apply to internal merit announcements for qualifying permanent General Schedule FS positions as well as a Direct Hire Authority for FS Career positions.
