Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps Overview:

Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps (ALCC) is a program of Conservation Legacy (CL). ALCC provides conservation service opportunities for Indigenous youth, young adults, and recent-era military veterans in Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona and works with other Native American communities and conservation corps across the country to provide similar opportunities. Our vision is to lead our Nations back to ecological and cultural well-being and we do this by empowering individuals to positively impact their lives, their communities, and the environment. ALCC’s crews are supported from operational bases in Acoma Pueblo, Albuquerque, Zuni Pueblo, Gallup, Kykotsmovi (Hopi), and Isleta Pueblo, and operates an Individual Placement (IP) program placing participants across the country.

This program is available to all, without regard to race, color, national origin, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender identity or expression, political affiliation, marital or parental status, genetic information, and military service. Where a significant portion of the population eligible to be served needs services or information in a language other than English, the recipient shall take reasonable steps to provide written material of the type ordinarily available to the public in appropriate languages.

Bureau of Land Management Mission:

The Bureau of Land Management's mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of public land of present and future generations. The BLM manages the largest amount of public land in the United States.. BLM's Las Cruces District Office (LCDO) manages 5.4 million acres of public lands, as well as administrating over 10 million acres of Federal mineral estate.

ALCC New Mexico Bureau of Land Management GIS Archeologists Overview:

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is providing an opportunity for individuals to work in the Cultural Heritage Resource program at the Las Cruces District Office (LCDO). The program implements the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA), the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), and other applicable cultural resource laws. There are two key components to the program: archaeological compliance and proactive management of archaeological resources. The Individual Placement will be assisting with populating a geodatabase of all backlogged sites and surveys completed for compliance related activities from these two program components, as well as organizing and scanning sets of backlogged site form and survey report files.

BLM Instruction Memorandum (IM) 2018-079 "Guidance for Implementation of National Cultural Resource Management Data Standard" requires that BLM follow this data standard when managing spatial data related to cultural resource sites and surveys. The interns will be assisting with implementation of the data standard through incorporating the sites and surveys from compliance projects at the Las Cruces District Offices. The environmental benefit that the intern will be providing is that through having up-to-date digital information and organized records, the BLM archaeologists will be able to make better resource management decisions and analyses related to cultural resource conservation and protection.

Essential functions and responsibilities:

There will be two primary products of these positions:

(1) Geodatabase, set to the BLM cultural resource data standard, backlogged of all the sites and surveys from compliance projects.
