Description

Principal Function: The Camp Counselor works as part of a team to deliver a safe, exciting, educational experience to a group of campers age 5, 6 & 7, 8 & 9, 10 & 11, or 12 & 13. Camp Counselors are empowered to create an unforgettable week-long day camp experience for each and every camper by serving as a positive role model and leading them through activities such as swimming and canoeing, arts and crafts, archery, hiking, and biking.

  • Summer Camp Counselor, 40hrs/week, May 20-Aug 4, $13.25 /hr

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Implements an approved, weekly program schedule for assigned campers and assists all campers with special needs as outlined by the American Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. Adjusts the program offerings to meet the needs of the assigned group.
  2. Checks and maintains camp facilities, equipment and personal first aid kit and communicates supply needs to the Camp Manager.
  3. Maintains check-in and check-out records for all assigned campers.
  4. Records daily attendance of campers and reports absences, late arrivals or early departures to the Camp Leadership.
  5. Communicates with campers' parents and/or guardians in a courteous and professional manner.
  6. Responds as needed to any medical/emergency needs of campers and staff.
  7. Participates in pre-season trainings and helps with end of season clean-up.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Must be 18 years of age or a graduate of high school.
  • High school diploma is required. At least one semester of college is desired.
  • Experience in childcare is required. Experience working with youth at a camp or school is desired.
  • Must be willing to adapt to new experiences.
  • Must be able to maintain high professional standards of Conner Prairie.
  • Must have a fun, friendly, and patient personality.

Other Skills and Abilities: The following skills and abilities are either required or desired.

  • The ability to cultivate relationships with and mentor children is required.
  • The ability to swim in pond water with a life vest is required.
  • The ability to paddle a canoe is required.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Schedule and Hours: The standard hours for this position are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. Staff training begins on May 20th, 2024, and camp begins on May 28th, 2024. The last day of camp is August 4th, 2024. Staff must be able to attend staff training week and at least eight of the ten weeks of camp. This description is for general illustrative purposes and is not a guarantee of available work hours.

Compensation: This is a full-time, seasonal position that is eligible for approved overtime. Benefits are not provided. Pay for this position starts at $13.25 per hour.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally is exposed to working in wet or humid conditions (non-weather), near moving mechanical parts, in high, precarious places, and outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

While the offices of Conner Prairie are open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, this position may require work beyond these hours and on the weekends. It also may require occasional domestic travel. Thus, a valid driver’s license is required.
