Connelly School of the Holy Child is Hiring an Upper School English Teacher Near Potomac, MD

The goal of all English Teachers at Holy Child is to guide their students in reading, writing, and thinking that leads to critical insight, self-awareness, and a connection with the world. Primary Responsibilities:

Pedagogical Responsibilities

  • Provide a unique and authentic educational experience designed to prepare students for post-secondary education and beyond, regardless of their field of study or career path.

  • Create lessons that offer a differentiated approach to support student learning.

  • Establish a classroom where all students feel safe and comfortable expressing their ideas or seeking help from their peers or the teacher.

  • Integrate the use of technology and instruct students in a way that prepares them for college and careers in the 21st century.

  • Use updated pedagogical practices like visible thinking strategies, Project-Based Learning, Inquiry-Based Learning, Socratic seminars, and other student-centered methods to authentically engage students.

  • Establish a foundation of critical thinking and evidence-based decision-making required of informed and engaged citizens.

  • Make oneself available during free/planning periods to supplement instruction for individual student needs.

  • Evaluate student performance continuously and provide timely and effective feedback to students based on their performance.

  • Keep accurate and updated records of student performance on all assessments and assignments on the school’s online student management system.

  • Coordinate with other teachers to develop interdisciplinary lessons and assessments across the curriculum.

  • Stay current on the latest developments in education and take advantage of professional development opportunities offered at the school and in the community.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively and proactively with students, parents, faculty, and administration.

  • Keep daily attendance records through the teacher portal.

  • Uphold and enforce all school policies as outlined in the student/parent handbook.

  • Attend and contribute to the exchange of ideas during monthly department meetings.

  • Serve as an advisor and faculty mentor to students.

  • Display exemplary attendance and be a positive team player.

  • To perform other duties as assigned by the Division Head.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • BA in English or English Literature; MA or Med is a plus

  • Previous experience as an English teacher

  • Commitment to embrace the school’s mission and values

  • Knowledge of teaching methods promoted by schools of excellence and English professional organizations.

  • Strong commitment to implementing Common Core standards

  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills

  • Genuine enthusiasm, personal warmth and passion for teaching and inspiring a love of learning

  • Ability to collaborate well with a diverse team
