Job description

Position: Full-Time Director of Therapeutic Recreation

Connecticut Baptist Homes, Inc. is small, not-for-profit campus in Meriden CT with a health care continuum offering skilled and an independent living service. Our focus is on long-term care and most of our residents come to us from home. If you are passionate about working with older people as they transition in life, we could be your new home. We are seeking candidates for this position who are looking for a new challenge and opportunity to join our wonderful team.

In this department manager level position, you will plan, organize, develop and direct the recreation department in accordance with current federal and state guidelines. With your team you will create new programs, lead activities, events and programing which stimulate interest, enhance skills and promote a culture of full life enrichment ensuring that the physical, spiritual, emotional and psychosocial well-being of each resident is being met. Additionally:

  • Plans, organizes, implements and conducts therapeutic group and individualized recreational and enrichment activities based on needs and interests of long-term and independent residents
  • Demonstrates an understanding of Therapeutic Recreation and engage in various daily tasks that are essential in the delivery of recreational programs, activities, entertainment, and enrichment programs
  • Provides supervision to therapeutic recreation staff members
  • Provides support to our Chaplain and visiting clergy who provide spiritual and religious activities and programs
  • Works with the rehabilitation department, as requested, to reinforce resident’s goals.
  • Prepares, posts, and distributes monthly program of events and daily activity schedules
  • Maintains equipment and supplies used in activities.
  • Attends Resident Care Conferences
  • Conducts ongoing evaluation of all recreation programs
  • Works with the interdisciplinary team in providing the proper recreational services for residents
  • Documents individual resident recreation plans and resident responses, through MDS, RCP, recreation assessments and progress notes
  • Organizes and supervises the volunteer program
  • Oversees contract employees providing services to residents, i.e. hair salon
  • Shows ability to independently conduct all activities including games, crafts, art, socials, parties, and music, etc. on an individual or group basis.
  • Manages performers and other vendors, providing entertainment and programs
  • Performs additional duties as assigned, i.e., purchasing supplies, charting, etc.
  • Manages departmental budget
  • Demonstrates ability to interact with residents impacted by dementia and/or other psychosocial behaviors.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation or related field
  • Previous experience in therapeutic recreation or a related role is preferred
  • Current certification by the State of Connecticut as a Recreation Therapist or years of experience in comparable job.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak English.
  • Must be able to safely perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed
  • Possess sound computer skills. Experience with Point Click Care a plus. Proficient in Word, Publisher and PowerPoint preferred. Ability to assist residents with access to virtual visits via iPads and tablets.

EXPERIENCE:
Must be a qualified Therapeutic Recreation Director, experience preferred. Experience in a supervisory capacity in a health care setting is preferred.
