Congressional School is Hiring a Lower/Middle School Music Teacher Near Falls, VA

Congressional School seeks a Lower/Middle School Music Teacher for the 2024-2025 academic year. The Lower and Middle School Music Teacher is responsible for creating and delivering an intentional, enriching, and innovative music curriculum for students in grades 3-8. The Music Teacher is responsible for providing learning experiences in music and the performing arts. The Music Teacher instructs, supervises, and inspires students in a supportive and positive climate that develops the talents of each student. In addition to the below duties and responsibilities, the Music Teacher will be positive, collaborative, and passionate.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Further develops, implements, assesses, and modifies, as necessary, a dynamic music program that aligns with Congressional's mission, vision, and values.Prepares and implements music lessons for grades 3 - 8, including vocal instruction, training with classroom instruments, and general musicianship including theory, composition and music history.
  • Provides a variety of learning experiences so that students demonstrate skills and concepts learned through individual and group performances, and a variety of communication mediums.
  • Provides and supervises opportunities for students to demonstrate individually and in ensembles or large groups the skills and talents developed in the music program, bringing pride of accomplishment to students and to the school.
  • Engages students in differentiated learning experiences for the range of skill levels and developmental needs found in the classroom, managing, when appropriate, multiple instructional activities simultaneously.
  • Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are age-appropriate music learning experiences.
  • Leads instrumental ensembles.
  • Directs the school chorus(es) and coordinates and directs performances in school concerts, festivals, and community events.
  • Plans, rehearses, and directs students in musical programs for the school.
  • Serves as the Musical Director for the annual Middle and Lower School Musical.
  • Attends all required Faculty meetings including grade level, department, division, and all-school meetings.
  • Serves as a Middle School Advisor and leads a daily Middle School Advisory; communicates regularly with parents as the liaison between home and school for designated advisees.
  • Listens and responds to student and parent concerns in a responsible, constructive and resourceful manner.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment during class time.
  • Collaborates with the Fine and Performing Arts Department faculty and actively contributes to its endeavors.Communicates effectively with students and families about student progress and upcoming events and performances.Evaluates each student's musical growth and performance on a regular basis. Completes formal reports of each student as prescribed by the school's grading guidelines, practices, and calendar.
  • Remains engaged in school, department, and/or individual regular professional development opportunities. Fosters a joy and enthusiasm for music-making throughout the school.
  • Actively supports the school philosophy, community, and policies.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music and/or Education.
  • Minimum 2 - 3 years' teaching experience in an independent school preferred.
  • Knowledge of a variety of music styles, repertoire, and teaching methodologies are necessary.
  • Orff Schulwerk certification is preferred.
  • Ability to play and teach guitar is preferred.
  • Ability to play piano/keyboard is required.
  • Experience in ability to direct chorale is required.
  • Ability to sing and play additional various musical instruments.
  • Sufficient training and experience to provide the ability to teach age-appropriate music curriculum to a level consistent with the duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in child development and educational practices.
