TITLE: Furloughable Field Technician I
LOCATION: DFWRC - Tribal Fisheries Program

Natural Resources Department - Polson, MT
SALARY: $17.91 to $20.59 per hour
CLOSING DATE: Thursday, May 30th, 2024, at 5:30 p.m.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
This is not a Testing Designated Position (TDP) within the definition of the CSKT Drug
Testing policy. The successful applicant, if not already employed by the Tribes
must pass a pre-hire drug test and serve a mandatory six (6) month
probationary period. The Furloughable Field Technician I is a full-time specialized,
seasonal position responsible for carrying out duties related to projects conducted by
the Natural Resources Department's Tribal Fisheries Program. Most of the work will be
in the field.

ASSISTS WITH FISHERIES ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT WORK INCLUDING,
BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Surveying fish populations using electroshockers, gillnets, seines, mask and snorkel,
traps or other techniques as required.
  • Correctly identifying fish to species, measuring and weighing fish accurately, marking
fish using fin clips.
  • Operating radio telemetry equipment.
  • Using various types of maps and aerial photographs to navigate.
  • Operating boats, motorboats, 4x4 vehicles, etc., in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Accurately recording field data, entering and verifying data using a computer,
performing miscellaneous clerical duties as assigned.
  • Maintaining field and laboratory equipment, assigned fisheries vehicles, and office/shop

space.
ASSISTS WITH ANGLER CREEL SURVEY ON RESERVATION WATERS INCLUDING:

  • Counting anglers and interviewing them with regards to their fishing activity and
success.
  • Providing basic recreation information to the public.
  • Assisting in a campaign to education the public about Flathead Lake management.

ASSISTS IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE LAKE TROUT REDUCTION EFFORTS ON FLATHEAD
LAKE:

  • Conducts fish-processing and interacts with anglers in Mack Days fishing events;
seasonally supervises up to eight (8) fish processors, ensuring proper food-safety,
worker-safety, product quality and productivity.
  • Assists in lake trout suppression gill netting.
• Operates expensive and technical food processing equipment.
  • Operates fork-lifts to unload boats and load trucks.
  • Understands and maintains specific facility sanitation standards related to public health

certification requirements.
ASSISTS WIH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF HABITAT RESTORATION PROJECTS:

  • Weed control, hand planting vegetation, seeding, watering plants, site preparation and
fencing.
  • Operation of heavy equipment, including tractors and associated farming implements,
backhoes, front end loaders and excavators.

ASSISTS WIH PREVENTING INVASION OF NON-NATIVE MUSSELS:
• Conducts boat inspections and provides boater education.
• Decontaminates boats suspected of being infected with invasive mussels.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (AS REFLECTED ON THE TRIBAL EMPLOYMENT
APPLICATION):

  • Required to have a high school diploma or equivalent. Some post-high school education
in Natural Sciences is desirable.
  • Knowledge of the geographical areas of the Flathead Reservation, in addition to basic
math, algebra, grammar, spelling and biology.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively verbally and in
writing.
  • Learn complicated scientific techniques and perform them accurately.
  • Qualify as physically capable based on an acceptable “physical condition” test.
  • Required to know how to swim.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must complete CPR and basic First Aid training.

4. Proof of enrollment in a Federally recognized Tribe if other than CSKT.
