  • Weekend Manager rotation (several times/year)
Essential duties and responsibilities:
  • Direct all activities of the Cytology department; maintain an in-depth understanding of current industry knowledge of procedural, regulatory and billing functions, and of available instrumentation and methodology.
  • Provide direct supervision and daily leadership to the Cytology department in concert with CompuNet’s mission, vision and values to meet business objectives and customer expectations.
  • Develop a departmental staffing plan, ensure that daily schedules, work assignments, and special projects fulfill requirements for optimal service delivery.
  • Review timekeeping system data on a regular basis, submit completed payroll records on time, manage department overtime.
  • Prepare the department budget; manage expenses on an ongoing basis.
  • Develop training programs and competency assessment tools; maintain records of training and competency as required. Select new employees, provide initial training and ongoing development through coaching, continuing education, competency assessment and the performance appraisal process. Set goals and objectives, determine appropriate corrective action and document employee performance throughout the year.
  • Provide clear, consistent communication to staff through regularly scheduled meetings, memos, bulletin boards and personal communication.
  • Develop departmental compliance, ergonomic, and safety procedures as needed based on company policies; ensure departmental compliance with all company and regulatory policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate departmental quality assurance activities, perform the regular review of quality control records, collect pertinent data, troubleshoot issues that affect workflow or operations, facilitate improvement activities. Monitor the technical quality of stains / slides; adjust and improve as needed.
  • Facilitate communications with pathologists and external customers; ensure timely distribution of slides to pathologists and of reports to clients. Support and promote all customer satisfaction initiatives. Evaluate customer satisfaction.
  • Write, revise and implement technical and departmental procedures consistent with the CompuNet Quality Program to ensure that the laboratory meets the requirements of CLIA’88.
  • Provide strategic planning for Cytology in conjunction with Assistant Director of Anatomic Pathology; make recommendations for improvement in methods and test menus to the Medical Director. Select instruments and methodologies, evaluate method performance.
  • Provide consultation on technical matters to internal and external clients, the business community and industry as needed.
  • Ensure readiness for accreditation and inspection visits by regulatory agencies; provide oversight of required proficiency testing.
  • Be available to represent CCL for CAP inspections of other labs relating to Anatomic Pathology
  • Contribute to the overall effectiveness of the organization by communicating Roadmap goals and promoting activities to achieve current Roadmap metrics.
  • Participate as part of the CompuNet Management Team, attending appropriate meetings and participating in various committees and teams as needed.
  • Perform routine technical work, advanced/specialized testing or any other duties assigned or needed.
Qualifications:
  • Requires Bachelor’s degree and Cytology ASCP certification; experience with both non-gynecologic and gynecologic specimen processing preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years cytology experience with demonstrated success in positions of progressively increasing responsibility in a medical laboratory environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and abilities in the areas of budget management, inspection readiness, policy and procedure creation, laboratory safety, policy enforcement, conflict resolution.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work within specified deadlines and timetables.
  • Ability to establish work priorities and handle several procedures simultaneously.
Physical demands and work environment:
  • Visual acuity and hand-finger dexterity to work at computer for extended periods.
  • Sit for extended periods for screening and result entry.
  • Stand for extended periods for Fine Needle Aspiration collections.
  • Perform accurate data entry in a potentially noisy environment.
  • Read/see small print on labels.
  • Use telephone to respond to client calls.
  • Comprehend verbal and written directions.
  • Concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted.
  • Complete integrity and accuracy in test performance and results reporting.
  • Work under pressure or in stressful circumstances.
Safety demands and requirements:
  • May have exposure to biohazard substances and hazardous chemicals.
  • Be familiar with and adhere to safety, ergonomic and health policies of the Company.
  • Comply with all PPE requirements when in the laboratory or other biohazard areas.
  • Complete required safety training and health evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Anticipate safety hazards, act upon unsafe situations and promote safety awareness.
