Job Description

The Operating Room Technologist (O.R.T.) provides direct and indirect services to the surgical patient under the supervision of the physician. The O.R.T. assist physicians during surgical and other sterile procedures by anticipating surgeon needs to make sure the procedure is executed as smoothly and efficiently as possible. They prepare and organize the operating room, clean, and sterilize equipment, and maintain a sterile field/environment. All employees may be cross trained in other job(s) and will be expected to perform duties, other than their normal assignment, as required by patient needs and defined by their scope of practice.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and organize the operating room equipment, instruments, and supplies as required for various surgical procedures.
  • Anticipate physician and patient needs during a procedure.
  • Facilitate the preparation and handling of surgical specimens.
  • Assist with surgical dressings.
  • Set up a sterile and sanitary environment and maintain the sterile field for the patient during procedures.
  • Utilize correct body mechanics in moving, transporting, and positioning patients, stretchers, and/or tables to prevent injury to patient and personnel.
  • Scrub and assist the physician in sterile
  • When necessary, circulate within the procedure suite and procure all procedural/surgical equipment.
  • Participate in stocking and restocking medical supplies.
  • Inspect, replace, and sterilize medical instruments.
  • Provide physicians and patients with necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Maintain a high degree of accuracy and an awareness of all patient safety issues involved with any invasive procedure.
  • Recognize and resolve equipment problems and discrepancies, anticipate patient needs and concerns, and facilitate the appropriate care required.
  • Follow Patient Privacy, Infection Control and Safety guidelines.

Essential Functions

  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding and working knowledge normal anatomy, abnormal anatomy, physiology, patient safety, interventional supplies, and equipment operation.
  • Use(s) professional judgement and critical thinking when performing job duties and patient care.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Participates in continuing education and learning experiences to enhance and maintain current knowledge and skills for continued competence.

  • Basic understanding of computer technology

Operating Room Technologist Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Certification in Surgical Technology Preferred as required by the state.
  • 1-2 years of operating room experience preferred.
  • BLS required.
  • Must maintain high patient privacy standards and adhere to HiPAA guidelines.
  • Must demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills.
