Description

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to the experience and education that are required by Federal, State, and Local guidelines. The minimum requirements for experience and education are:

• High School graduate or equivalent
• Phlebotomy Certificate – CPT I, or CPT II
• Minimum one year phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Familiar with computer technology and data entry
• Ability to provide two current acceptable and verifiable professional references

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Takes assignments from the LS or designee, follows up using established protocols
• Appearance and attire is to be neat and acceptable; will be required to wear uniform (laboratory jacket)
• Aids laboratory staff in meeting their workload demands by performing clerical tasks, order entry, and data entry at the direction of the LS
• Performs capillary and venous blood collection
• Recognizes and handles all "STAT" requests with appropriate urgency
• Verifies patient/specimen identification and informs Clinical Laboratory Scientist and LS when incomplete or inaccurate labeling occurs
• Performs specimen processing when directed by LS
• Files reports and Master Lab Requests
• Faxes lab reports to various physician offices and ensures the fax log is kept current
• Printing lab reports and delivering of lab reports
• Perform reference test processing at the direction of the LS
• Keeps all lab bench supplies stocked
• Waste disposal and cleaning as directed by LS
• Other computer related tasks as directed by LS
• Unpack shipments of lab supplies and stock in designated areas.
• Informs LS, physician, and other appropriate personnel of changes in patient condition or need
• Actively participates in staff meetings
• Routinely attends and participates in in-service training programs
• Collects data as required to meet legal mandates
• Maintains licensing in accordance to State and Federal guidelines.
• Provides accurate and legible data to the LS or designee
• Maintains confidentiality in all matters related to the patient and the organization
• Maintains personal composure and integrity under stressful conditions
• Help in Pathology as needed
• Help inside Lab as needed
• IF Medical Assistant (MA), may be asked to float or help in scope of MA
• Performs related duties or help in any other department as assigned by Manager

REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be able to work a full-time flexible schedule
• Must be able to pass all pre-employment screening (background check, drug tests, and references)
• Must attend basic, intermediate, and advanced orientations prior to independently providing assisting services in laboratory

Knowledge base:

• Principles, practices, and procedures of the laboratory environment
• Preparing accurate reports and performing data entry
• Principles and practices of phlebotomy
• Lab record-keeping requirements
• Lab protocols and techniques
• Medical terminology as needed to communicate with physicians, laboratory, and nursing staff.
