Compass Family Services is Hiring a Bilingual Residential Counselor, Compass Family Shelter Near San Francisco, CA

Organization: Compass Family Services is a 100 year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco’s homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

Program: Compass Family Shelter provides families experiencing homelessness with a safe place to stay. Each family has their own room and access to a kitchen, children’s play area, and other communal spaces. While families are at shelter, they receive intensive support from our team. We help them stabilize, find housing, and address challenges and barriers.

Schedule: Full time, Tuesday - Saturday. Hours are 9:30am-5:30pm on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday; 10am-6pm on Wednesdays. Friday and Saturday are off.

Compensation: $24-29 hourly full benefits (including medical/dental/vision fully covered for employee kids!)

Responsibilities:
This position is a blend: as a Residential Counselor, you are responsible for making sure that all families at the shelter are safe, supported and following shelter protocols. As a Case Manager, you work intensively with a few families to find housing and address any other needs.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Provide informal counseling and peer support, conflict resolution, and crisis intervention to all families staying at shelter when needed.
  • Work intensely with up to three families to find housing, access resources, and remove barriers to long-term stability.
  • Ensure that all families know about program rules. Conduct room checks and follow program protocols any time a family is not in compliance.
  • Share information about available resources through distribution of flyers, informal conversations, and updates to our database.
  • Meet with families for program intakes and orientation to the building.
  • Work with the team to make sure that common areas are safe, welcoming and clean.
  • Maintain up-to-date case files.

Qualifications:

  • Bilingual Spanish required (fluent or high level of professional proficiency)
  • Experience working in a social services setting
  • Two years of counseling experience, including crisis intervention
  • Understanding of issues facing homeless families
  • Knowledge of Bay Area social service and housing resources
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work
  • Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel). Experience with Salesforce is a plus!

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary range: $24 - $29 per hour based on experience, languages spoken and education.
  • Paid time off: just under 4 weeks of vacation your first year, just under 5 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave, time off for education.
  • Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.
  • Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-5

Location & Covid Considerations:

  • Work location: 626 Polk St., in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco
  • After their first 90 days, staff have the option to work from home one day per week.
  • Covid vaccination required for all staff
  • Masks and other precautions in place in the workplace
