Company located in Rhode Island is Hiring a Deputy Fire Chief Near Warwick, RI

Summary: Serve as the second in command of the ARFF unit at Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport. Provide principal support for the Fire Chief, with specific emphasis on training and administration.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • In the absence of the Chief of Department, shall carry out all duties and assume all responsibilities of the Chief to ensure compliance with applicable FAA regulations, NFPA standards and the Airport Emergency Plan.
  • Initiates and acts within the ICS system during any emergency operation.
  • Functions as part of the Airport Management team.
  • Directs training activities within the ARFF unit in compliance with FAA requirements.
  • Administers the training records of the ARFF unit in compliance with FAA requirements.
  • Maintains the mission of the organization by meeting staff training metrics that exceed 400 hours annually.
  • Directs the inspection of fuel farms and fueling vehicles in compliance with NFPA standards, and maintain appropriate records in compliance with FAA requirements.
  • Supervises the operation of personnel, fire station, apparatus and equipment of the unit.
  • Directs and supervises service testing of ARFF apparatus and extinguishing systems.
  • Liaison with building, airfield and automotive maintenance divisions of the airport to ensure building, grounds and equipment are maintained in an orderly serviceable manner.
  • Maintains administrative records for the ARFF unit.
  • Works with a number of federal, state and local agencies to meet objectives of the Airport Emergency Plan.
  • Assists in the purchase of equipment and supplies.
  • Enforces applicable NFPA standards.
  • Available for emergency call-back as necessary and as directed by the Fire Chief.
  • Participates at command level in live fire training activities as required by Part 139.
  • Provides assurance that the ARFF department will pass required testing by outside agencies.
  • Assist the Fire Chief with health and safety responsibilities.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Second in command; assumes chief's role in his absence.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • The ability to lead and manage people. 
  • Must be capable of command level decision making during all phases of emergency response. In-depth knowledge of firefighting techniques in general. 
  • Be able to plan and conduct fire rescue training. Be able to handle a significant administrative workload.

Education/Experience:

  • Five years in a leadership position in a full-time paid fire department at the rank of captain or higher, preferably an ARFF unit..
  • Bachelor's degree in fire science preferred.
  • NFPA 1001, (Firefighter I Level II) 1021, (Fire Officer) and 1041, (Fire Service Instructor) certification or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Certificate of completion of the National Incident Management Systems; IS-700, ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-300 are required, additionally, completion of NIMS ICS-400 and IS-800 is preferred.

  • This position requires climbing, balancing, crawling in narrow places, running, and lifting over 100lbs during emergency situations and training simulations while wearing protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • The employee should possess visual acuity and depth perception.
  • The office demands include computer usage requiring keyboard usage and other audio / visual training aides.

  • During emergency or training situations the employee could be exposed to extreme hot or cold weather, hazardous materials, dust, smoke and odors, loud noises due to explosions, fire, and water.
