Principal Director of Fund Development:

Department: Fund Development

Reports to: President

Employment Status Classification: Exempt, Full-Time Salary

Salary Range: Based on experience.

Job Description Summary:

The Principal Director of Fund Development will lead Community Housing Network’s (CHN) fundraising and marketing efforts to support the mission and ensure financial sustainability. This position will collaborate with the executive team to set fund development goals and strategy, guide and supervise staff to develop and implement supporting strategies including grant achievement, individual and corporate donor approaches, communications, public relations, marketing, event management, and volunteer engagement functions. 

Essential Functions:

People Management

  • Provide guidance and support for team of marketing and fundraising professionals to achieve fundraising goals and objectives.
  • Provide leadership coaching and performance management (through motivation, interpersonal communication, delegation, empowerment).
  • Models, coaches and inspires excellence, accountability, CHN values and teamwork.
  • Manages staff performance (hire, onboard, train, develop); fosters and supports career development.
  • Empowers direct reports with supportive leadership minus the presence of micromanagement.

Operational Management

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan that will achieve strategic goals, and includes individual giving, corporate partnerships, special events and grants.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing strategy that includes all CHN messaging, external communications and supports annual strategic plan goals.
  • Monitor and evaluate fundraising performance, identify areas for improvement, and adjust maximize results.
  • Prepare regular reports on fundraising progress and outcomes for the executive team and board of directors.
  • Manages departmental budgets and resources.
  • Responsible for departmental goals, processes, results.

Strategic Leadership

  • Internal Strategic Leadership
    1. Collaborate across CHN with program staff to ensure alignment between fundraising efforts and organizational priorities, with other departments’ staff, and lead departmental communication.
    2. Contribute to strategic planning through active participation in process and as champion of strategic initiatives.
    3. Participate in implementing CHN’s plan to foster greater diversity, equity and inclusion within CHN’s board, staff, programs and policies.
    4. Participate on internal and board committee.
  • External Strategic Leadership
    1. Build and maintain relationships with donors and stakeholders to generate patronage for CHN’s mission and programs.
    2. Represent CHN at networking events, conferences, and other fundraising-related activities.
    3. Stay current on best practices and emerging trends in fundraising and philanthropy.
  • Other duties as assigned by executive leadership.

Qualifications and Skills:

Fund Development and Marketing:

  • Demonstrated success in fundraising, including experience with:
    1. Major gifts and individual donor strategies,
    2. Building corporate and foundation relationships/partnerships,
    3. Grant writing,
    4. Event management,
    5. Volunteer engagement and conversion to donors, and
    6. Donor databases and CRM systems
  • Strategic thinking and planning
  • Successful management of complex budgets
  • Skilled at program goal setting, implementation, monitoring and reporting
  • Work at a high level of abstraction and manage required details.
  • Confidence to design, recommend and apply creative solutions to meet objectives.
  • Ability to work unsupervised and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a team perspective and dedication.
  • Maintaining a high level of confidentiality.

Leadership

  • Strong leadership skills, including motivating and managing a team, promoting creativity and innovation; systems thinking.
  • Ability to make well-reasoned decisions within the team framework and in the best interests of CHN for both the present and the future.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills that are effective with a diverse range of audiences including board members, volunteers, internal staff, donors, executives, potential funding partners and all constituencies.
  • Outstanding relationship building, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to be a personal representative of CHN’s Core Values: Inclusion, Integrity, Innovation, Passion. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively and effectively internally and externally with individuals of diverse backgrounds and in diverse positions of authority and responsibility. 

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years relevant experience preferred.
  • AFP certification preferred.

Travel:

This position requires access to reliable transportation, possession of a valid driver’s license, and maintenance of automobile insurance coverage that meets minimum organization requirements ($100,000/$300,000/$100,000 coverage). CHN reserves the right to require a motor vehicle record check with respect to any employee where driving is an essential function of the position.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

This position is a hybrid position, requiring one (1) to two (2) days a week in the office. For work from home, the candidate must have a home office that allows for privacy and strong internet service. In addition, this position requires attendance at community events and donor specific locations. While performing the functions of this job, the position is both sedentary and at times requires the ability to be active including standing, bending, lifting and/or arranging files, office products and supplies and may require employee to periodically stand on a short step stool to access files and boxes.
