Registered Nurse

Purpose/Description

Provides direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness, and emergency care to students and staff in response to the nursing assessment and in accordance with professional standards, school policy and procedures, and state and local mandates.

Nursing Care

  • Administers medication with appropriate documentation according to the Illinois Department of Human Services Guidelines for Medication Administration in Schools and the district health office manual.
  • Maintains updated student medication list.
  • Prepares student medications for field trips as needed per district guidelines.
  • Makes appropriate assessment and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter.
  • Follows District and building policies concerning injuries and illnesses.

Communication

  • Maintains communication with the Certified School Nurse, principal, teachers, other school personnel, and parents/guardians to meet the health and safety needs of students.
  • Provides health services and information in an effective and positive manner to enhance the health and wellness of the school community.
  • Completes occurrence reports for students per District protocol.
  • Alerts Certified School Nurse whenever any communicable disease is present in school.
  • Reports to Certified School Nurse and principal about all hospitalized students.
  • Maintains health files.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding all school and health-related issues.
  • Consults with a Certified School Nurse with questions and concerns.
  • Participates as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the identification, evaluation, and placement of students into special education programs. Completes the health component of the IEP as indicated.

Organization

  • Records all student health office visits in the student data system health log.
  • Follow up on health occurrences and illnesses when indicated.
  • Maintains current mandated health reports.
  • Participates in maintaining accurate medical records to assure compliance with state mandates including immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditions, and the related archival responsibilities.
  • Completes daily attendance.
  • Makes absentee calls
  • Reports excessive absences to the Certified School Nurse and principal
  • Prepares District, State and Building reports as directed by the Certified School Nurse.
  • Arranges Homebound Tutors.
  • Makes first aid kits for classrooms.
  • Maintains health office Go Packs.
  • Familiar with and follows evacuation procedures.
  • Check the AED battery monthly from August – June.
  • Assumes other tasks as may be assigned from time to time.

Professional Development

  • Participates in job orientation and ongoing in-services.
  • Maintains awareness of current policies and procedures in the Health Office Manual and AHA Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Book.
  • Reviews and becomes familiar with the Department of Public Health Communicable Diseases Manual.
