Job Summary:
The Laboratory Coordinator performs all activities associated with lab preparation, i.e. preparation of lab reagents, setting up lab equipment and supplies, ordering and purchasing materials, maintaining and repairing equipment, keeping labs safe and clean, communicating with instructors concerning lab activities and scheduling, supervising hourly and work-study personnel, developing and maintaining record keeping systems for supplies/materials and semester schedules, and developing and implementing both new and improved lab activities for all chemistry lab courses. The lab coordinator must command strong communication and organizational skills. The lab coordinator must demonstrate commitment to fostering and supporting a teaching, learning, and working environment that honors diversity, equity, and inclusion.
85% Primary Duties
· Plan, prepare, and set-up labs for Chemistry (general, organic and online) and chemistry labs for Cannabis Science.
· Plan, prepare, and assemble laboratory kits for all online Chemistry classes.
· Maintain consistent communications with all instructors regarding lab activities and lab schedule.
· Plan and prioritize tasks required to meet daily and weekly needs of labs.
· Order, purchase, and track lab supplies and materials for all Chemistry classes (general, organic and online).
· Maintain and track purchase card and align with budget.
· Track the operating budget for Chemistry.
· Maintain lab areas (ensure safety and cleanliness) and lab equipment (including repair) for Chemistry laboratory spaces.
· Troubleshoot equipment as needed.
· Make necessary improvements to lab activities in consultation with the department chair.
· Implement lab safety guidelines.
· Hire, train and supervise lab assistants (work-study and hourly).
· Develop and maintain record keeping and inventory systems for supplies.
· Maintain chemical inventories within Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC) chemical inventory and coordinate the disposal of hazardous waste.
15% Secondary Duties
· Participate as a member of the AHEC Laboratory Safety Committee (LSC).
· Participate in various community service projects as they directly relate to CCD (partnerships with Denver public schools etc).
· Attend applicable professional development activities and workshops.
· Assist in revising laboratory manuals, as needed.
· Maintain Chemical Hygiene for Chemistry Program.
· Recommend new lab activities to incorporate into existing courses, as needed.
· Support and advance department strategic plan and perform other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS: Any equivalent combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
: Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or closely related subject and/or experience equivalent.
:
· One (1) year of experience working in a lab.
· Chemical (organic and inorganic) waste disposal
· Familiarity with college level chemistry courses
:
· Must demonstrate an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
· Knowledge of educational laboratories: equipment, chemicals, solution preparation and handling, and extensive knowledge in laboratory safety (including but not limited to chemical handling, storage and waste management).
· Proficiency in computers - able to use different programs, keep track of ordering and inventory, assist in experimental development, etc.
· Highly organized and detail oriented.
