POSITION SUMMARY:
The Community College of Aurora (CCA), under the leadership of President Dr. Mordecai Ian Brownlee, is establishing the Department of Community Relations & Alumni Engagement. The goal of this new department is to implement community relations and public relations strategies that advance the College's goals with key external constituents, supporting the College's Strategic Plan. In addition, the department is responsible for managing the relationship between the college and its alumni through programs and projects that engage alumni in strengthening and providing tangible benefits to alumni, the institution, and current students. We are seeking an accomplished leader, collaborator, and motivator who will serve a critical role in ushering the Community College of Aurora into its next era of student success, community engagement, and performance excellence.
Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills
Director of Community Relations & Alumni Engagement
  • This position reports to the President and works strongly in collaboration with the Special Assistant to the President, Executive Director of Community College of Aurora Foundation, and Director of Marketing & Strategic Communications.
  • Serves as the public information officer (PIO), maintaining open and positive lines of communication with local communities and the media, including writing and distributing news releases, broadcast information, coordinating interviews, public service announcements, and feature articles.
  • Support the Office of the President, including writing or overseeing speeches and statements, supporting event planning, preparing background and briefing materials, developing special communications, and digital engagement.
  • Collaborate with the Office of the President and the CCA Foundation to develop a CCA Magazine/e-Magazine to highlight the accomplishments of the college, its alumni, and students
  • Develop and lead a robust alumni engagement program, including a master calendar of international, regional, industry, and reunion events both in person and online, along with volunteer activities designed to foster pride and connect alumni with other alumni and current students.
  • Establish a community and alumni engagement campaign to promote CCA's pride throughout the institution's service area.
  • Supervise and manage an alumni engagement professional by providing clear direction and developing key objectives and goals for the role.
  • Regularly approaches local media with story ideas. Develops written content and story material for CCA's Website and other external communications avenues.
  • Supports college relationships with regional businesses, industry, institutions, residents and community partners, including but not limited to: higher education, nonprofits, associations, chambers of commerce and neighborhood associations.
  • Serves as the point of contact on behalf of the president's office related to logistics for sponsorships/partnerships with community partners.
  • Regularly represents the College at external partner events.
  • Supports management with press release and media advisory generation for key regional news related to the College's community outreach and partnerships.
  • Supports promotion of the College by way of liaising with local media, donors, alumni and other key constituents in alignment with the College's goals and Strategic Plan.
  • Serves as a key member of the College's crisis communications team.
  • Interpret the purpose, philosophy, and vision of the Community College of Aurora to the general public.
  • Work collaboratively with college staff, faculty, and instructors.
  • Work special events and functions on nights and weekends, as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications & Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, marketing, fine arts, or other related fields
  • Excellent communication skills including publication-level writing and editing
  • Excellent collaboration and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work under the pressure of very tight deadlines
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends to support events
  • Ability to quickly assess unforeseen situations, use sound and thoughtful judgment to make decisions and problem-solve
  • 3 years managing social media profiles on behalf of an organization, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and additional channels deemed relevant
  • Superior attention to detail, proofreading and editing skills
  • Leadership and supervisory experience, including demonstrated staff management skills
  • Commitment to working with a diverse and inclusive community
