Communities First, Inc. is a Michigan-based nonprofit 501c3 whose mission is to build healthy, vibrant communities through economic development, affordable housing and innovative programming. CFI is focused on providing safe, quality affordable housing, increasing economic opportunities, and improving the quality of life of the populations that the organization serves.
Job Summary:
The Accountant will prepare and maintain financial records to track the organization's assets, liabilities, profit and loss, tax liabilities, grants, donations, and other related financial activities.
Essential Functions:
  • Perform processing of monthly accruals, amortization of prepaid expenses, fixed asset depreciation and recording of adjusting and reclassification journal entries
  • Prepare and analyze budgets and forecasts to actual variance reports
  • Perform general accounts analysis and reconciliations, including monthly reconciliation of intercompany accounts, asset accounts and liability accounts
  • Prepare monthly internal and external financial statements, cash forecasts and budgets
  • Assist in preparing replacement reserve draw requests from mortgage companies
  • Prepare and assist with year-end tax and audit workpapers
  • Prepare periodic loan compliance reporting for Lenders
  • Ensure vendor records are complete and assist with annual 1099 preparation
  • Assist with Construction Draws, maintain and collect sworn statements and lien waivers
  • Assist in uploading and recording financial information into AppFolio for new acquisitions and property management clients
Education:
  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting, business, finance or a related field; advanced degree preferred
  • Licensed CPA is preferred but not required
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Training and Experience:
  • Non-profit accounting experience is preferred
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in accounting. Property management and/ or construction accounting experience preferred but not required
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office (advanced Excel user) and proficiency with QuickBooks is preferred
  • Attention to detail and respect for confidentiality
  • Ability to synthesize data and make complex information understandable
  • Strong knowledge of GAPP principles
  • Strong organizational, time management, and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and people skills
  • Detail-oriented
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks/engagements and the confidence to question existing processes
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with others to achieve goals
  • Self-starter
