Position Job Title: Medical Paralegal 

Reports to: In-House Counsel

FLSA Classification: Full-Time, Salary, Hybrid

Commonwealth Pain and Spine (CP&S) is one of the fastest-growing, progressive, comprehensive pain management groups in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. You will work under the direction of the In-house Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer, and work with the Director of Compliance. This position will be instrumental in assisting with a variety of tasks as the Company grows into new markets and new service offerings.

This position involves a hybrid of legal, compliance, analytical, and administrative skills including; 

  • Perform research on a variety of healthcare topics, laws, regulations, and procedures, and prepare a summary of findings. 
  • Perform healthcare organization acquisition due diligence, including the review and organization of documents.
  • Review contracts and leases, and recommend revisions as needed.
  • Fulfill auditing processes and projects.
  • Managing projects, and supervising initiatives within the legal and compliance departments.
  • Prepare documents from templates. 
  • Prepare and edit correspondence. 
  • Assist with corporate governance documentation, filings, and records. 
  • Assist with litigation matters and discovery requests.
  • Participate in workgroups to collaborate, acquire information, prioritize, and meet deadlines. 
  • Communicate with agencies in response to inquiries and requests for information. 
  • Routinely collaborate with internal departments to support and review internal departments' work products.
  • Stay up to date on developments in healthcare law and compliance.
  • Develop policies, procedures & standards of practice. 
  • Review medical records, and patient issues, and provide advice on issues.
  • Communicate with clients, doctors, patients, insurance companies, vendors, and other professionals.
  • Assist in preparing reports for the board of directors.
  • Use organizational skills to keep track of tasks and deadlines for the department.
  • Receive and prepare sensitive, and highly confidential material, including transaction documents, contracts, litigation materials, intellectual property materials, strategic planning materials, and other legal matters.
  • Create educational and training materials. 
  • Perform general office duties as needed, including answering phones, scheduling, copying, and maintaining files.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years’ experience with legal services, including experience working with a variety of legal documents and managing legal projects. Proficient and highly literate in common computer applications including internet research, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), video conferencing and email. 
  • Minimum 1 year of healthcare law experience or healthcare compliance experience, including knowledge of legal & medical terminology and experience working with medical records.
  • Interaction/exposure in a health care setting, legal practice and/or business with basic understanding of health care operations and communication with physicians and staff. 
  • Proficient with general office equipment such as telephone, fax, copier. 
  • Professional demeanor and ability to defuse sensitive situations in a calm manner. 
  • Ability to work independently, be self-directed, with minimal direction to achieve accomplishments. 
  • Responsible for managing multiple tasks and projects with competing priorities and deadlines and will need to exercise initiative and judgment in both administrative matters and substantive legal tasks. 
  • Ability to identify problems or opportunities and propose solutions to improve workflow and departments.
  • Must be able to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and tact.
  • Excellent research and writing skills.
  • Effectively communicate and work with diverse constituencies and corporate cultures; develop rapport with people at all levels of the organization. 
  • Strong organizational skills, including ability to prioritize, effective time and project management, ability to work well with many different types of individuals. 
  • Ability to quickly assimilate, assess, and act upon new initiatives in order to manage multiple priorities. 
  • Ability to represent the legal and compliance departments in a professional and responsible manner internally and in public. 
  • Ability to anticipate change, adjust responses accordingly, and initiate steps to maximize resources toward a common objective. 
  • Be professional, clear, concise, in both oral and written communications. 
  • Able to communicate clearly and concisely to gather and present information accurately. 
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws governing healthcare.
  • Experience interacting with state and/or federal regulators. 
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records systems.
