THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position is a technical position in the field of vector control. As an Aquatic Biologist, your duties will involve taxonomic identifications, assessing black fly control needs, and analyzing arthropod samples with a focus on black flies, mosquito control, and tick surveillance. Additionally, you will participate in molecular testing in order to determine the presence of diseases in arthropod samples. Other duties you may be responsible for include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting laboratory examinations, identifications, and enumerations of arthropod samples
  • Conducting aquatic biological sampling
  • Preparing pools of mosquitoes, ticks, or other arthropod vectors for pathogen testing
  • Interpreting biological data and calculating biological metrics to estimate disease risk
  • Sorting stream macroinvertebrates to monitor stream quality

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Limited term, full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel and overtime required as needed

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • A bachelor's degree with a major in a biological science, natural science, environmental science, or natural resource management, including or supplemented by six college credits in freshwater aquatic biology, aquatic ecology, aquatic botany, water pollution biology, entomology, limnology, or closely related aquatic science coursework; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes six college credits in freshwater aquatic biology, aquatic ecology, aquatic botany, water pollution biology, entomology, limnology, or closely related aquatic science coursework.

Special Requirement:
  • This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license.
