Commonwealth of VA Careers is Hiring a Research Scientist, Division of Infectious Diseases and International Health Near Charlottesville, VA

The Division of Infectious Diseases and International Health in the University of Virginia's School of Medicine seeks a highly driven Research Scientist to join Dr. Mami Taniuchi’s dynamic team. Dr. Taniuchi’s lab focuses on developing molecular and sequencing diagnostic assays and tools for detecting infectious diseases in clinical and environmental specimens. Dr. Taniuchi’s research is mainly conducted at international sites in low- to middle-income countries such as Bangladesh and Pakistan. This position will focus on the development of these diagnostic assays and tools at the University of Virginia and the subsequent implementation of these assays at international sites. All the projects are highly collaborative with many international collaborators. Therefore, willingness and aptitude to work in a multidisciplinary team setting is a must. The ability and desire to travel internationally to resource-limited laboratories and field work for extended periods is a must for this position.
Candidates must have an MS with significant experience or PhD in Microbiology, Environmental Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related fields by the start date. However, the applicant must have a tangible track record in microbiology, wastewater epidemiology, or infectious diseases as assessed by first and mid-author publications. Willingness and aptitude to receive training and work in BSL2 laboratories and work with infectious agents are required. Experience with PCR-based assay development, sequencing assay development, and validation of diagnostic assays for use in clinical and environmental specimens is required. The ability to develop bioinformatic pipelines and to code in R or Python is preferred.
This is a one-year appointment. However, the appointment may be renewed for additional one-year increments contingent upon available funding and satisfactory performance.
Minimum Requirements:
Education: Education: Requires a doctoral degree in Microbiology, Environmental Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related fields or a Master’s degree in these fields with significant experience.
Preferred Requirements:
Ability to code in R or Python
Build and use bioinformatic pipelines
This job will require field work at international sites located in low- to middle-income countries. The ability to travel internationally for extended periods of time will be required.
This is an exempt level, benefitted position. This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance. The position will remain open until filled. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. A completed pre-employment health screen is required for this position.
