Commonwealth of VA Careers is Hiring a Lab Specialist Near Manassas, VA

Job Description

Manages the analytical instrumentation of the Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Laboratory, Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. Analyzes samples and develops, selects, and modifies analytical methods and lab techniques. Instructs and supervises individuals in instrument operations and maintains the instruments in good working condition. Perform quality control on analytical results and report analytical data.

Required Qualifications

Individual should be thoroughly familiar with environmental analytical chemistry methods and instrumentation, including a working knowledge of quality control and quality assurance procedures. Skills also should include the ability and experience to maintain instruments in good working order, which involves troubleshooting, performing minor repairs, and periodic collaboration with instrument manufacturers' service personnel. Instrumentation includes but is not restricted to the following: liquid chromatography coupled mass spectrometry, gas and liquid chromatographs, ion chromatographs, total organic carbon analyzer, and other minor laboratory instruments including solid phase extraction units. Individual should be capable of training students and faculty in analytical procedures and instrument operation.

Preferred Qualifications

Capability to develop laboratory standard operation procedures based on the US Environment Protection Agency (EPA). Hands-on experience with per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances analysis using triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. Familiar with EPA method 1633 Analysis of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in Aqueous, Solid, Biosolids, and Tissue Samples by LC-MS/MS
