Job Duties

The Virginia Retirement System (VRS) is seeking a finance professional to fill the role of Investment Accountant. The Investment Accountant performs a variety of monthly, quarterly, and annual tasks associated with recording, analyzing, and reconciling financial data. In addition, the position liaises as necessary between the investment and custodian bank to accurately and efficiently facilitate the transfer of funds and to resolve issues and discrepancies that arise, and ensures that all associated management fees are paid.
Essential duties include but are not limited to:
• Ensures investment instructions are processed in a timely manner; processes capital contributions, cash transfers, and asset reallocations for the investment accounts and obtains the proper approvals.
• Performs financial analysis for the assigned limited partnership on a quarterly basis; provides the summary financial information to the master custodian, BNY Mellon, to record the quarterly financial data; verify management fees for these limited partnerships.
• Processes the payment of investment management fees, verifying that the investment management fee invoice received from the investment manager to ensure the terms are in agreement with the investment management fee contract and resolving any variances.
• Ensures the December quarter fee calculations for limited partnerships are sent to the Investment Department for review and approval.
• Performs assigned analysis and reconciliation of assets, liabilities, income, and expenses reported by BNY Mellon, and prepare assigned monthly schedules to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the financial information.
• Processes capital calls, cash transfers, new account setups, and miscellaneous direction letters
• Follows-up with Investment managers and BNY Mellon as necessary to resolve any issues that arise.
• Provides support in the daily operations for the investments of the pension trust fund.
• Prepares assigned schedules and analysis for the compilation of financial information for the ACFR during the year-end process.
• Prepares documentation for the 1099's for the calendar year and maintain the electronic file to track the amounts to report. Maintains the electronic file for W-9's from managers. Coordinate with General Accounting as necessary to ensure the timely issuance of 1099's.
• Effectively works with all levels of management and staff to improve processes and procedures.
• Performs special accounting tasks and other projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The best qualified candidate will posses the following:

• Bachelor's degree in finance or accounting.
• Two (2) years of accounting experience, preferably in the financial services industry or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Strong level of attention to detail and accuracy.
• Strong data analysis and critical thinking skills.
• Abilities to work independently with minimal supervision; prioritize; meet deadlines; manage multiple assignments simultaneously; resolve complex issues.
• Strong organizational skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficient in MS Office products, particularly in Excel and Word applications, online general ledger accounting systems (must be able to write/create reports using master custodian web based application).

Additional Considerations

Certified Public Accountant licensure preferred.

Special Instructions

Currently, this position has a hybrid work schedule which means working in the office two days (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) and working remotely (Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays) three days a week. The selected candidate must be able to work in the office any day of the week as required by the manager.
