Job Duties

This position analyzes, researches, and investigates alleged regulatory and unlicensed violations under the jurisdiction of the Department of Professional & Occupational Regulation (the Department). The successful candidate will possess the ability to accurately analyze complaints associated with applicable standards of conduct, statutes, and licensure requirements; recommend appropriate outcomes based upon the collection of information and its comparison with applicable regulations and statutes; prepare factual, accurate, grammatically correct, and detailed written reports; successfully manage multiple assignments and adapt to changing priorities; and present findings in Department Informal Fact-Finding conferences, courts, and to other staff members—all of the above being accomplished in a timely fashion.
This individual will work from a home office and will be provided office equipment, and a state vehicle or business mileage reimbursement as cost-beneficial to the Commonwealth. It is required that the successful candidate will either reside in or maintain their primary residence within a 45-mile radius of the North Central region’s borders. The North Central region encompasses the following counties/cities: Bath, Highland, Buena-Vista, Lexington, Rockbridge, Augusta, Staunton, Waynesboro, Harrisonburg, Rockingham, Madison, Greene, Albemarle, Charlottesville, Nelson, Fluvanna, Goochland, Louisa, Orange, Culpepper, Stafford, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Hanover, Caroline, King George, Westmoreland, Northumberland, Richmond, Lancaster, King & Queen, Essex, and King William. The position will be primarily responsible for any complaints from those areas. This individual will also provide investigative assistance to other investigative regions, as designated by the Department, as needed. In order to perform the duties of the position, overnight statewide travel may be necessary.

As part of The Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR), you will play a critical role in the economic vitality of Virginia by helping qualified people start businesses and work in their chosen fields. DPOR is an executive branch agency under the Secretary of Labor for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Our regulatory boards are comprised of practitioners and citizens appointed by the Governor and are responsible for regulating certain professions and occupations, ranging from architects and contractors to cosmetologists and professional wrestlers. We protect the
public by verifying minimum competency, investigating complaints, and upholding professional compliance with state laws and regulations.
TELEWORK OPTIONS: This position is classified as a full-time telework position.

Minimum Qualifications

* Ability to complete investigations as demonstrated by investigative experience or experience conducting thorough research and applying analytical skills
* Ability to effectively collect, comprehend, and verify information through interviews and other sources with a preference for relevance to the Department’s investigative practices
* Ability to accurately interpret complex regulations and statutes
* Ability to compare, and appropriately apply, information collected to complex regulations and statutes, and recommend appropriate outcomes based upon internal procedures.
* Ability to accurately document findings in accordance with policy and procedure
* Strong oral and written communication skills and proofreading skills
* Ability to effectively utilize Microsoft Office and Adobe products with a preference for intradepartmental software programs and databases
* Ability to perform and complete assignments accurately and independently with limited supervision
* Excellent organizational skills to include experience successfully managing a regular caseload with multiple ongoing activities and tasks
* Commitment to customer service with the ability to effectively and appropriately interact with the general public, Department staff, and members of other departments and agencies
* Must possess a valid driver’s license, and participate in a driving record monitoring program if hired

Additional Considerations

*Equivalent work experience with Public Administration, Public Policy, Criminal Justice, or similarly related field preferred.
*Experience investigating, analyzing, and documenting findings regarding regulatory matters and/or working in a detailed investigations environment with progressive responsibility is desirable.
*The successful candidate will be required to pass a national fingerprint-based background check.
