Job Duties

$3,000 Sign-On Bonus for those new to state service with one year signed written agreement.
Eastern State Hospital, located in Williamsburg, Virginia, was founded in 1773, with a well-intentional emphasis on community focused mental health care. This state-of-the-art campus, situated on 500 acres, consists of two patient care buildings with 300 patients, and a highly skilled staff of over 900. Eastern State Hospital is part of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) system and is accredited by the Joint Commission.
ESH invites applications for the position of a CRISIS PREVENTION RESPONSE TEAM. 
The qualified candidate will: maintain positive interaction with patients building a rapport through therapeutic support and activities; tolerate and de-escalate patients when physically and/or verbally agitated; provide safety and security on assigned units through efficient and compliant use of TOVA (Therapeutic Options of Virginia) and other approved de-escalation techniques when responding to an emergency and/or code; be familiar with behavioral plans and the implementation of behavior support plans and follow as appropriate; respond to all emergencies and/or codes throughout the facility in a professional and therapeutic manner and think quickly and independently during emergency situations; respond to the scene of any fire, disaster, duress alarm (i.e. codes),or any other such emergency and assist as needed; conduct routine rounding on assigned units to ensure the safety of patients and staff, including, but not limited to, full unit patient checks; conduct walk-throughs as designated by Administration on the units to help provide a safe and secure environment and milieu for patients and staff; be able to follow appropriate, approved procedures to physically control, confine, and restrain in difficult situations; and provide training on the unit to staff such as TOVA, verbal de-escalation techniques, code white drills, etc.
NOW HIRING FOR DAY SHIFT: 7 a.m. - 7 p.m., weekdays and rotating weekends and holidays*.
*Must be willing to work a rotating schedule as assigned. Shifts may be assigned on WEEKDAYS, EVENINGS, NIGHTS, WEEKENDS and HOLIDAYS based on current staffing and coverage needs.

Please note this is not a Security Officer position but a unit-based position specializing in therapeutic de-escalation of patients. This is a crisis/support position in a mental health facility that is responsible for maintaining the safety culture and initiatives of the facility while on duty.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.
  • Prior experience working in law enforcement, military police, corrections, unarmed security or mental health related fields.
  • Experience handling difficult individuals and familiarity with therapeutic de-escalation techniques.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience of seclusion and facility-approved restraints as directed by supervision/medical/nursing department.
  • Experience in de-escalation techniques.
  • Experience in preparing reports and conducting investigations.
