Job Description:
Mountain Empire Community College is a comprehensive two-year college serving residents of Lee, Scott, Wise, and Dickenson counties, and the City of Norton. MECC is one of twenty-three colleges in the Virginia Community College System and operates under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Local Advisory Board. The College is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the local jurisdictions.
Mountain Empire Community College invites applications for adjunct instructors to teach American Sign Language (ASL) classes in various. We are seeking applicants available for on-campus and/or online for daytime and/or evenings. Salary is based on the academic preparation and work experience of the applicant and is determined according to the VCCS Adjunct Pay Schedule in force at the time of contract date. Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in a classroom/virtual to students with a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences.
Adjunct instructor positions are available for various areas in the Health Sciences Division including American Sign Language.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s in ASL with educational courses in ASL or Deaf Studies from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the US DOE.
Proven subject matter knowledge, which may be evidenced by training, experience, and/or credentials.
2-3 years of related professional experience.
Work experience as an interpreter.
Non-credit courses require substantial experience in the field of expertise by the instructor.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in ASL or applicable medical field.
Successful teaching experience, preferable at a community college.
Experience with online learning.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to incorporate technology routinely into instructional and faculty responsibilities.
Demonstrated ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds.
