The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) is an independent agency of state government charged with regulating the conduct of horse racing and pari-mutuel wagering on horse racing and related activities within the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The KHRC is a leader in the welfare of horse and rider and the safety and integrity of horse racing.
Horse Racing Commission is charged with protecting the confidence of horseracing stakeholders - owners, trainers, breeders, fans, and the wagering public - through enforcement of its regulations. The Vet Tech plays an important role in insuring that the sampling process can withstand legal scrutiny, and that drug testing results can be used to enforce the rules of racing. We are looking for a Veterinary Technician to join our highly skilled Division of Veterinarian staff. An exciting opportunity to work with Kentucky State Veterinarians, assisting with the regulation of horseracing throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. As a Veterinary Technician and under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian, performs duties associated with the collection, processing, documentation, and transport of biologic samples from horses entered to race in meets across the state of Kentucky.
Work is typically performed outdoors in horse barns and at racetracks in various counties throughout the Commonwealth (Jefferson, Fayette, Boone, Simpson, Henderson, Knox, Christian).
Attention to detail is critical. Should be able to lift heavy objects, stand for extended periods, use computer, work some overtime and work alternate schedules.
Should be willing to travel, including some overnight stays, and be willing to work on weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Perform equine biological sampling as directed by KHRC personnel
  • Process equine biologic samples for retention or transfer to official drug testing lab.
  • Manage test samples, processing, shipping supplies inventory
  • Perform general housekeeping, keeping areas and equipment clean and litter free.
  • Assist with maintaining records and files regarding racetrack medication.
  • Report any problems or questionable behavior of horses or attendants to state veterinarians.
  • Assist with moving office and barn supplies from one racetrack test barn to the next.
  • Perform other duties as assigned Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited college or university with an associate's degree in the field of veterinary technician, veterinary technology or a degree related to veterinary sciences (to view accredited colleges and universities refer to: https://www.avma.org/education/center-for-veterinary-accreditation/accredited-veterinary-colleges
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have two years of experience as a licensed veterinary technician.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: A bachelor's degree from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited college or university in the field of veterinary technician, veterinary technology or a degree related to veterinary sciences will substitute for associate's degree and the two years of experience as a licensed veterinary technician (to view accredited colleges and universities refer to: https://www.avma.org/education/center-for-veterinary-accreditation/accredited-veterinary-colleges
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be licensed as a veterinary technician by the Kentucky Board of Veterinary Examiners. For additional information, refer to: https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/law/statutes//statute.aspx?id=53948 Employing agency is responsible for insuring applicant is licensed by the Kentucky Board of Veterinary Examiners as a veterinary technician. Agency must submit copy of valid Kentucky veterinary technician license to Personnel Cabinet with appointment paperwork.. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Work is typically performed outdoors in horse barns and at race tracks. Incumbent will be exposed to dangers and hazards associated with working around horses and race tracks.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
