By joining our Prestonsburg Section, Martin County Unit as a Highway Technician Assistant II in Martin County, you’ll have the opportunity to perform basic level work and assist with intermediate level work in roadway or roadside maintenance operations. Learns to operate intermediate level equipment.
Holders of the Highway Technician Assistant II position will complete tasks such as:
  • Operate single axle trucks to haul maintenance materials to and from job sites.
  • Operate dump trucks with snowplow and salt spreader in the winter months. Learn to operate the loaders, mow-trim, and other specialized equipment.
  • Learns to set up proper traffic control for job sites in accordance with MUTCD standards
  • Performs basic level work and assists with intermediate level work in roadway or roadside maintenance operations.
Holders of this job will obtain the following skills:
  • Gain knowledge in setting up work zones.
  • Learns to operate specialized equipment and tools.
  • Gain a working knowledge of KYTC Snow and Ice Policies.
  • Attends required training classes.
Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
  • 2 years of highway or construction maintenance experience.
  • Class B tanker endorsement CDL License.
  • Completed First Aid and Snow and Ice Training and must possess Traffic Control/Flagger and OSHA 10 Certifications or equivalent.
Incumbents in this job title must possess the ability to work, sit, stoop and bend. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds. Must be able to respond to emergencies.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have two years of construction or highway maintenance experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial drafting, design technology, construction technology, or a related field will substitute for two (2) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. College coursework related to any of these fields will substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a Class B commercial driver's license to qualify for employment in this job classification.. The employee must successfully complete the KYTC Highway Technician Academy Level 1 or equivalent within one year of employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
