By joining our Traffic Engineering & Permits Section as a Highway Technician Assistant I in Pike County, you’ll have the opportunity to take advantage of classroom and in-field trainings to allow for continued education to become specialized in engineering related technical tasks in construction and or maintenance programs.
Holders of the Highway Technician Assistant I position will complete tasks such as:

• Hauling materials to and from job sites.
• Learns to install traffic signs, including sign types, spacing, placement, height, etc.
• Flagging for operations requiring traffic control.
• Learning and assisting with basic surveying activities on construction projects.

Holders of this job will obtain the following skills:

• Experience working on rough terrain and in changing climates.
• Experience in equipment operations for road maintenance.
• Experience completing shift or on-call schedules.
• Experience in equipment operations for road maintenance.

Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:

• Basic equipment operating experience.
• Basic maintenance or construction experience.
• Experience preforming preventative maintenance on vehicles or equipment.

Must possess a valid driver’s license, some travel will be required for professional trainings, incumbents in this job title must possess the ability to work sit, stoop and bend. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds. Must be able to respond to emergencies.

Minimum Requirements

Working Conditions

Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
