By joining the Division of Abandoned Mine Lands, Collaborative Projects Branch, Water Projects Section as an Environmental Scientist Advisor in Perry County, you will have the opportunity to serve as a technical, scientific advisor for the Collaborative Projects Branch, Water Projects and Acid Mine Drainage programs.
Holders of the Environmental Scientist Advisor position will complete tasks such as:
  • Serving as a Scientific Technical Advisor for the specialized areas of Water Supply Replacement Program (WSRP), Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) Program, and other programs within the Collaborative Projects Branch.
  • Performing additional/ongoing critical assessment of sites including project oversight inspections.
  • Attending public meetings, hearings, and meets with officials, state and local agencies, industry and private landowners regarding agency-related activities.
  • Reviewing plans, specifications, and contracts, performing mine history research, environmental investigations, drafts Environmental Assessments, and reviewing invoices and reports.
  • Conducting scientific studies that require environmental monitoring activities which include the collection, organization, evaluation and interpretation of samples and data.
Holders of this job will learn the following skills:
  • Water quality testing
  • NEPA procedures and Environmental Assessment development.
  • Procedures for Water Supply Replacement Eligibility studies
Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Background in physical sciences, mining technology, or industrial technology.
  • Hold a current valid driver's license.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a natural, biological or physical science OR Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 20 semester hours in a natural, biological or physical science.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Five years of experience in natural resources, environmental control, or a related area.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate study in a natural, biological, or physical science will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering, or a related area will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE
Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in an office setting. Incumbents in this class may perform work in the field with frequent travel on a statewide basis. An incumbent in the position may be subject to adverse weather conditions, exposure to snakes and insects, water-borne pathogens, broken glass, rusty metal in streams, and hazards common to operation of electro-fishing equipment, which requires the following of safety procedures.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
