Positions Summary The Learning Support Specialist 2 (LSS2) performs the duties of a professional tutor. Althoughthere may be limited opportunities for online tutoring, there is an expectationthat this position will transition to fully in-person tutoring in the comingacademic terms. The LSS2 is expected to work with students, either one-on-one or in small groups to help them attain a deeper and more substantial command of the assigned subject matter. The LSS2 must be able to work with multiple students and with other tutors present, in a shared tutoring space. The LSS2 will communicate with the department regarding individual student progress and needs. This position is responsible for generating reports from tutoring software and sending them to his/her supervisor. The LSS2 must have a strong command of the subject matter and be able to communicate it effectively to students using a variety of methods and teaching tools. Tutors for advanced level courses in discipline area of expertise only. Helps students to develop and apply appropriate learning and study skills. Meets with students at appointed time Administrative /Clerical Functions Maintains documentation of all tutoring sessions. Generates department reports for tutoring and maintains documentation of department tutoring interactions. Provides course instructor(s) with communication/information that can be used to facilitate student learning of course content. Advanced use and implementation of the College’s tutoring software. Continuous Learning and Mentoring Maintains a thorough knowledge of the course material, as well as multiple instructional methodologies, to accommodate various student learning styles. Attends tutor training sessions. Other Duties and Responsibilities Holds special study sessions upon the request of instructors, students, Departmental Tutoring Coordinator, or Department Chair. *Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required. Usual Physical Requirements While performing duties of this job, the employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when entering data into computer. The employee regularly stands and walks, and sits for extended periods of time. Employee converses verbally with others in person and online. Employee occasionally reaches with hands or arms, climbs or balances and stoops, kneels, crouches or crawls. Employee frequently uses hand or fingers to touch. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision and distance vision. Employee occasionally lifts or exerts force of up to 25 pounds when moving materials. Working Conditions Normal office and classroom working environment.
Provides support to LSS, LSS1, Peer Tutors & Supplemental Instructional Leaders. Assists with technical support of tutoring software and reports.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of: planning and scheduling; computers, software, including cloud applications, to include Microsoft Office applications (Work, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint); Advanced Subject-matter knowledge; learning techniques; College curriculum and expectations of students; best practices in tutoring students in advanced degreed programs; tutoring programs, and platforms utilized in the classroom. Skill in: verbal and written communications; maintaining good public relations; customer service; conflict resolution; general typing; application of job software programs; time management and organization; communicating with a diverse student body; mentoring and providing support for teammates. Ability to: maintain confidential and sensitive information; engage a variety of tutoring strategies with appropriate sensitivity to students’ learning styles; work with students from diverse social and academic backgrounds and who have special learning needs; become proficient at and implement tutoring software utilized in the department; take appropriate initiative and accept responsibility within the job parameters.
Minimum Qualifications: Master’s Degree in related field. One (1) year of teaching and/or tutoring experience in an educational environment desired. State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).
