Lower School Science Faculty (Temporary, One-Year) Effective Fall 2024

Columbus School for Girls (CSG) is an independent day school in Columbus, Ohio, founded in 1898, serving diverse students in grades pre-k through grade 12. Columbus School for Girls seeks to hire an energetic and creative Lower School Science Teacher for a one-year, temporary position during the 2024-2025 academic year . CSG offers a competitive salary and professional opportunities and welcomes candidates who add to the diversity of the school community.
Major Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Teach all sections of Lower School (first through fifth grade) Science
    • Two sections of each grade
    • The curriculum involves a mix of life, physical, and earth and space science standards
    • Unit outlines, major projects, and resources will be provided, but there will be flexibility to adapt as well
    • The curriculum strongly emphasizes inquiry-based learning and student sensemaking
  • Plans and leads spring and fall day-trips to CSG's outdoor campus, Cynthia's Woods, for grades one through five.
  • Collaborates with grade five Homeroom teachers to plan and run a week-long experience at Cynthia's Woods
  • Plans and leads other science field trips as needed
  • Plans and runs the Lower School Science Fair and the third grade Moth Ball
  • Collaborates with Lower School faculty to holistically support students
  • Participates actively in the life of the school, including recess and carline duties, attending morning meetings in a homeroom, chaperoning school trips (including a potential overnight trip), participating in special assemblies and events, and possibly coaching.
Experience, Characteristics, Qualities:
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the ages and developmental stages of elementary school and the ability to teach the full range of grade levels in Lower School
  • Strong candidates will have a familiarity with three-dimensional science instruction and prior experience teaching science to elementary-aged children
  • A commitment to an all-girls education and the desire to learn about the best ways to help young women to reach their full potential as learners and leaders.
  • Excellent communication skills, a genuine appreciation of working with elementary students, a sense of humor, and a collaborative teammate.
