Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks is Hiring a Seasonal Park Ranger Near UNKNOWN, OH

Purpose

Park Rangers provide assistance to park visitors through education and direction; ensuring that the visitors have a fun and safe a safe experience while visiting our parks.

Examples of Duties

Patrols park in motor vehicle, bicycle, or on foot to ensure safety of visitors and to assist in enforcement of Park District rules and regulations.

Provides information and assistance to park visitors; guides visitors to picnic areas, shelters, park facilities, etc.; provides assistance with lost children, property, disabled vehicles, etc.; answers questions regarding park facilities and operations, wildlife and vegetation; and assists with reservations.

Performs light maintenance duties including the cleaning of restrooms, nature centers, shelters/lodges; removes debris and litter and changes trash bags.
Assists in identification of safety hazards and takes appropriate action; responds to accidents and emergencies and administers first aid and CPR consistent with level of training completed.
Assists in performing security check on buildings, vehicles and appliances (e.g., ensures gates and doors are locked, appliances are turned off, alarms are engaged, etc.).
Assists with special events, including set-up/breakdown, parking logistics/traffic control, and programming.
Operates two-way radio in performance of duties.
Issues verbal warnings and contacts local authorities and park staff as necessary (e.g., emergency medical providers, local police, game protectors, etc.).
May operate trucks, trailers, related power equipment and tools to perform routine maintenance and cleaning of park and facilities; (e.g., cleans and stocks restrooms, shelters, picnic areas, etc.; may clear trails, clean and repair trail signs; mow grass, trim weeds; haul materials, tools and supplies; may perform minor repairs to buildings and facilities.
Promotes the Park District through public contact.
Prepares required records and reports (e.g., accident and incident reports, daily log sheets, vehicle reports, etc.).

Performs special projects and related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Experience: Students enrolled in a college or university pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree program or within two quarters/semesters of graduation, preferably in related fields such as Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Ecology, Criminology, Parks and Recreation, Biology, Interpretation, Conservation, Education, etc. Strong customer service skills and experience required.

Language Skills: Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, local law enforcement personnel; ability to complete routine forms.

Team-Oriented: Works on a team. Outstanding customer service, communications and interpersonal skills.

Attendance: Being present at work is an essential function of the position.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to deal with symbols in formulas, equations or graphs; ability to prepare meaningful, concise, and accurate reports; ability to calculate fractions, decimals, percentages; ability to recognize errors and make corrections. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and initiate proper protocols; ability to deal with problems involving few variables within a familiar context; ability to carry out instructions; ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

Licenses, Registrations: Possession of a valid Ohio driver license, insurable by Metro Parks' insurance carrier, and ability to conform to the driving standards policy. Possession of valid First Aid/CPR/AED certification and within six (6) months of employment/appointment to the position.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, talk and hear, operate two-way radio and light motorized equipment, sit, work with hands, lift heavy objects, drive park vehicles, ride bicycles, operate off-road/utility vehicles, and golf carts, etc. The employee is frequently required to use hands to complete reports, use personal computers, etc.

Work Environment: While performing the regular duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee may spend a portion of the time working in the shop and/or office. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Any Additional Information: Knowledge of safety practices and procedures, basic building and grounds maintenance. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, local law enforcement personnel and the general public; ability to operate power equipment and tools. Candidate must satisfactorily complete a background investigation. Required to work weekends, evenings and holidays.
