A Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) plays an essential role in working with the registered and licensed occupational therapist (OTR) both in outpatient and inpatient setting. With the supervision of the OTR, a COTA will provide direct treatment and complete the documentation related to the treatments. The COTA is responsible for education, using modalities, tools, and activities when competency has been demonstrated and under the direct supervision of the OTR. The COTA will contribute information to the OTR for progressing POC and goals and related to the treatments provided by the COTA.
Job Requirements - Knowledge of / Skill / Ability to: Must have own automobile in safe and working order. Must have a valid driver’s license and documentation of current vehicle insurance per policy. Good knowledge of Scope of practice as related to working with an OTR and State law
Understand basic treatment for a variety of clients such as, pediatrics, neurology, hands, and orthopedic issues. Flexible and able to work under the supervision of several OTRs (takes direction, adapt treatment approaches, etc.).
License/Certification: Must have a valid state license or valid temporary permit as an Occupational Therapist, issued by the Oregon State Occupational Therapy Licensing Board. BLS certification required through American Heart Association (AHA). Valid drivers’ license / comprehensive auto insurance for home visits. Current Food Handlers Certificate or able to obtain within thirty (30) days of hire.
Education and / or Experience: A qualified individual must have successfully completed a program culminating with a degree as an Occupational Therapist Assistant from an accredited school. One year of recent clinical experience preferred
Physical Demands and Work Environment Conditions / ADA Compliance: Works inside. Subject to occasional stress in fast-paced environment and meeting deadlines. Must be capable of providing treatments, some of which will require strength. Aware of proper body mechanics at all times.
Position involves standing, walking (most of the time), managing stairs, stooping, lying and kneeling on floor, and occasional carrying and lifting of lightweight materials (up to 20 pounds). May be required to sit for extended periods of time. Requires visual acuity and depth perception to recognize words and numbers; and hand and finger dexterity and hand/eye coordination to use a computer keyboard and common office equipment. Transfers patients to/from cars, stretchers, beds, chairs, and ambulates as necessary. Must have ability to lift at least 50 lbs. Work with cognitively limited clients and children or adults who have sensory hypersensitivities that create anger and forceful behaviors. Work in crowded and small areas or multi-therapist occupied spaces.
