Job Summary
C olumbia Independent School is a college preparatory independent school with a rich
history of whole-child education and a global perspective. CIS’s demanding and dynamic
curriculum and our many opportunities outside the classroom serve to cultivate
introspective, innovative, and interesting young people who become engaged participants
in their collegiate careers and beyond. CIS is seeking a college counselor who will
demystify and humanize the college search process by placing the focus on each individual
s tudent and his or her needs. Th e college counselor works with all students and their
parents through the college search and application process to develop and foster
i ndependence, self-awareness, and authenticity to support students as they identify their
own goals and focus in life.

Columbia, Missouri
CIS is a growing school of 420, JK-12, located in a mid-sized city halfway between the major
metropolitan areas of St. Louis and Kansas City. Columbia is home to the flagship
U niversity of Missouri, and so offers all the amenities of a college town—and a populace
that values education, cultural opportunities, award-winning restaurants, and collegiate
a thletics. Outdoor opportunities abound in the area.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Oversee a robust and engaging college search and application process for an Upper

School of approximately 100 students with varied expectations.
  • A ssume responsibility for counseling students in grades 9 through 12 in regard to
t he entire college selection, application and admission procedures.
  • Coordinate the program and calendar of all standardized testing for students

including scheduling test dates, registering students, arranging for special "prep"
s essions, administering the tests, and providing pre- and post-test counseling.

  • Develop the extensive summary reports on students’ progress on standardized
testing to the school community as appropriate.
  • Stay current with trends in college admission, higher education, and standardized
testing (SAT, ACT, etc.).
  • Serve as the School’s official AP Coordinator, as defined by the College Board.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Upper School to ensure students are meeting

graduation requirements, selecting an appropriate course of study, and engaging
meaningfully in school activities.

  • Update permanent records of students’ testing and academic work.
  • Conduct individual and group sessions in all areas of college counseling.
  • Teach two semester-long elective courses (spring semester for juniors and fall
s emester for seniors) to implement our college counseling curriculum.
  • Write personalized and authentic letters of recommendation for students.
  • O versee the faculty writing of the requested recommendations for students applying
to college.
  • Maintain an attractive, welcoming, and informative College Counseling Center.
  • Oversee visits to colleges and from college representatives.
  • Use the college search platform SCOIR to its full potential.
  • Maintain accurate records of acceptances and scholarship monies offered.
  • R epresent the school at relevant state and national conferences and workshops.
  • P erform other duties as assigned by the head of school.
  • Support the school and its leadership.
  • Communicate with students and parents through regular weekly updates in the

c ounseling portion of the school’s weekly Lion’s Letter.

O ther Duties Lead an upper school advisory group (Pride).
  • Teach an upper school course or provide academic support and instruction.
  • Provide support for various upper school student award programs and ceremonies.
  • P lan and chaperone an annual college visit trip.
  • Collaborate with admissions to write the updated school profile on an annual basis.
  • Coordinate all standardized testing.
  • Attend regular department, division, and faculty meetings.
  • Analyze US testing data in conjunction with department chairs and implement
n ecessary changes to the curriculum.
  • Develop the extensive summary reports on students progress on standardized

t esting to the school community as appropriate

Qualifications Master’s degree preferred
  • Familiarity with counseling-related software and student data systems, including
B lackbaud and SCOIR
  • Strong written and verbal skills coupled with excellent interpersonal
communication and relationship skills
  • Sense of humor, joy, and the ability to develop and relate to our students
