Position Description


Title:
Preschool Teacher - Summer

Department: Migrant Education Program

Supervised by: Director of Migrant Education or Designee


Position Purpose:

To provide instruction to children (3-5 years of age) in activities designed to promote social, physical and intellectual growth needed for primary school in a self-contained preschool setting during the summer.


Core Job Functions:

  • Establishes and maintains rapport with students and parents.
  • Establishes a supportive, nurturing learning environment in the classroom.
  • Assists children/families in needed areas of early childhood curriculum, social, cognitive, self-help, receptive communication, expressive communications, gross-motor, fine-motor, and family strengths and needs.
  • Responsible for regular periodic monitoring and data collection of child’s progress and provides feedback to parents.
  • Assists with the training and coordination of assistants.
  • Communicates regularly with parents and other Migrant Program staff.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive working relationship with ESD staff, district personnel, parents, related service providers, and other agency personnel.
  • Undertakes a program of continuing education to maintain and improve teaching skills and knowledge in the area of Early Childhood Education.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records as required by laws, district policies and administrative regulations.


Department Specific Responsibilities:

  • Teaches basic skills such as color, shape, number and letter recognition, personal hygiene, and social skills by adapting teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs and interests.
  • Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicates those objectives to the children.
  • Provides a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate and use, both in learning activities and in imaginative play.
  • Organizes and leads activities designed to promote physical, mental and social development, such as games, arts and crafts, music, and storytelling.
  • Establishes and enforces rules for behavior, and procedures for maintaining order.
  • Prepares materials and classroom for class activities.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, to support the success of the agency.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of child development and early education theories and practices.
  • Ability to modify and adapt curriculum for children with special needs.
  • Ability to teach and instruct individuals and groups.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop collaborative relationships with students, families, district personnel and other agency staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey information to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to relate and communicate effectively with children and parents from diverse cultures, socio-economic levels and disabilities in a non-judgmental manner.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to interpret, implement and administer curriculum, federal, state and district policies and administrative rules.


Education and Experience:

  • Minimum Bachelor degree in Early Childhood Education or related field.
  • Ability to communicate in English and Spanish is preferred.
  • Three to five years successful experience in teaching preschool children.
  • Other alternatives to the above qualifications as the District may find appropriate and acceptable.


Working Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the core functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, sit and communicate or hear. The employee frequently is required to maintain a high activity level in order to adequately instruct, support, and supervise children. The employee is occasionally required to run and physically restrain a child. May spend time sitting on the floor or child-sized furniture. Must be able to get down on the floor repeatedly and lift 40 pounds. May come in contact with children who are ill and/or contagious.


Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Columbia Gorge ESD Board policy on evaluation.


Terms of Employment:

Number of days per year as per program calendar. Employment will generally take place on days when students are present.
