Job Summary:
The Clinical Instructor is responsible for supervising nursing students in the clinical and laboratory setting under the direction and support of the nurse faculty. This supporting role promotes the development of graduate professional nurses from Columbia College.
  • Perform job duties in accordance with Columbia College’s vision, mission and values, and contributes to the development of the Nursing Department.
  •  Guide, teach and evaluate the student’s performance in the clinical and laboratory areas by:
    • Assigning students to patients.
    • Orienting self and students to participating agencies.
    • Assigning and grading clinical paperwork.
    • Evaluating student on an on-going basis using structured evaluation forms and anecdotal notes, in a timely fashion.
    • Conducting pre and post clinical conferences in the clinical area.
  • Evaluate and conference with students individually at established intervals and as needed (at least midterm and the conclusion of each clinical and laboratory rotation).
  • Teach clinical aspects using the established nursing curriculum.
  •  Function within established framework of organizational authority.
  • Communicate regularly (at least weekly) with the full-time faculty of the course regarding student performance in the clinical and laboratory area.
  • Provide needed information to the faculty in making decisions about student performance in clinical and laboratory settings including guidance and probation status.
  • Follow all policies and procedures for the nursing program and assist in the development, maintenance and administration of all policies and procedures.
  • Communicate and collaborate with the nursing site coordinator and lead course faculty on classroom, clinical, laboratory, and other aspects to develop the nursing program.
  • Participate in selecting, evaluating, counseling and guidance of the nursing students.
  • Maintain student records including class, clinical and laboratory data.
  • Recommend program purchases and nursing equipment.
  • Participate in systematic evaluation of the nursing program.
  • Participate in on-going development for professional organizations such as Missouri State Board of Nursing and National League of Nursing.
  • Help plan and participate in special events pertaining to the Nursing Program.
  • Serve on various nursing committees as assigned.
  • Participate in Columbia College activities as assigned.
  • Participate in developing nursing resources.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationship with cooperating agencies and clinical sites.
  • Participate in outside community organizations, communities and committees that pertain to nursing, education, health and welfare of the community.
  • Demonstrate professional growth and development through attending workshops, seminars, conferences, and other continuing education opportunities.
  • Ensure confidentiality of records of students and patients in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA.
  • Practice superior customer service.
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.
  • Display respect and civility to all constituencies regardless of method of communication.
  • Attend work timely and during the established hours of operation on a regular basis; work additional hours as business necessitates.
Certification(s): Current license in Missouri to practice as a
Registered Nurse.
Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree with a major in nursing for ASN courses
  • Master’s Degree with a major in nursing for BSN courses
  • Minimum of three (3) years clinical experience immediately prior to their appointment.
Preferred Education/Experience:
  • Previous clinical instructor experience supervising and evaluating nursing students.
  • Specialized teaching areas require clinical experience in the course content area.
Special Requirements:
  • Flexibility to travel to various clinical agencies or between campuses.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is rarely exposed to outside weather conditions; however, possible exposure to hazards and physical risks to personal safety may occur while operating certain equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually mild.
