Salary Ranges:

Suvey Tech II (Engineering Physical Science Tech II) - $62, 568 - $68,820 annually

Survey Tech III (Engineering Physical Science Tech III) - $65,700 - $78,828 annually

This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).

New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

About the Work Unit

This position works in the Right of Way Unit in the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Region 3 in Grand Junction, CO. The Unit researches, appraises, acquires, oversees and surveys real estate (property, known Highway Right of Way (ROW) and Engineering and Maintenance facilities by 1) creating ROW plans, plats and property descriptions, 2) researching and developing property title history, 3) negotiating with property owners to acquire property and relocate occupants, 4) overseeing the property after acquisition, 5) appraising those real estate rights to conclude relevant opinions of value in compliance with applicable statutory requirements and guidelines and 6) responding to the needs of the public relative to this work unit.

About the Position

The Survey Tech II or III provides support (field and office) to Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) I and II team members. Depending on the level, Survey Tech II or III, duties may include, but are not limited to, setting up and operating survey equipment and software files for project control; conducting field investigations for locating land and property corner evidence and topographic Surveys in TMOSS format; processing data collected in the field and preparing maps, plans and documents based on field information; collecting and processing of aerial or ground-based Lidar and photogrammetry data for topographic mapping of existing conditions using conventional and GPS Surveying equipment and software and assisting in the drafting of ROW plans and initial compilation of real property descriptions under the direction of one or more licensed Professional Land Surveyors.

Your duties and responsibilities may include some or all of the duties listed below, depending upon the level, Survey Tech II or III:

Assists PLS I and PLS II team members by setting up and operating Survey instruments including robotic total stations, data collectors, global positioning system (GPS) equipment and digital levels.

Trains less experienced staff on the operation of equipment.

Collects topographic data for the preparation of topographical maps of highway lands and properties.

Assists the PLS in performing or performs research, calculations, and analysis of boundaries, plats, subdivisions parcels, easements and ROW plans.

Gathers ownership data from CDOT, Federal, County, Municipal and court records.

Determines impacted ownerships, reviews title work and examines ownerships and encumbrances to ascertain whether documents are missing and which documents affect the ownerships.

Identifies, reviews, and measures ownership evidence in the field to assist in the location of property lines.

Understands and assists PLS I with survey datums and projections and utilizes that information in the field to obtain survey data tied to a control network.

Checks Survey instruments on National Geodetic Survey (NGS) calibration base lines (CBL).

Checks and upgrades software for data collection equipment, assures equipment is kept clean and in good working order.

Assures the reliability of field data by checking for errors in equipment settings, data transmission and data collection.

Understands various data transmission formats and settings between computer software and data collectors, robotic total stations, and GPS radios to ensure that data is downloaded correctly.

Operates equipment to establish project control following the CDOT Survey Manual requirements pertaining to the setting of project control monuments.

Uses and operates GPS receivers for OPUS observations/solutions and GPS static observations.

Uploads files into the online NGS database and Trimble Business Center.

Learns to operate/operates computer software, including MicroStation, InRoads / OpenRoads and Trimble Business Center to view and inspect Survey data; create topography (TMOSS) deliverables for roadway designers; draft plans, control diagrams, monument records, exhibits, maps and sketches and calculate search data points for boundary location.

Learns to use/uses InRoads / OpenRoads for the creation of parcel base maps, control diagrams, monument records and other documents as required by CDOT specifications.

Assists with the preparation of ROW plans in accordance with the Colorado Department of Transportation Survey Manual, ROW Manual and the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the "State Board" (Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors).

Prepares documents based on interpretation of historic ROW drawings and the records from CDOT, County, Municipal, and other public and private agencies.

Assists the Professional Land Surveyor by proof reading property descriptions for parcels of land that will be encumbered by an easement or will need to be acquired in fee for projects.

Plots property descriptions from deeds to check the accuracy of descriptions.

Assembles office projects and reviews project work.

Assists Professional Land Surveyors in the collecting and processing of aerial or ground-based Lidar and photogrammetry data for topographic mapping of existing conditions. When combined with conventionally collected Survey data, it will be used as the base map for the existing topographic digital terrain model. Incorporate the existing conditions model into the ROW plans for analysis of boundary evidence and occupation lines.

Provides ROW information to CDOT employees and the public.

Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Primarily 7:00 am 5:30 pm work hours, Monday-Friday (flexible schedule may be available)

Approximately 60% spent in the field, 40% spent in the office

Travel required during work hours to project sites

Occasional overnight travel
